shareExcellent question actually. Apparently the other posters here are either too young or too dumb to remember the House films, mostly made in the 1980s, to which this film is in certainl ways quite similar.
Despite its fun riffs on movies like The Shining, The People Under the Stairs, Silence of the Lambs, etc, this movie--at least the first half-- really reminds of House and House II. The latter got absymal reviews but is in fact a terrific horror comedy, whereas the first one was more conventionally successful. And it's not so much the plot that's reminiscent as the "feel." H
Note that it's really the first half that has that House "feel." Without revealing any spoilers, I'd say the second half is considerably more serious and quite a bit better than the first half.
Beautiful movie. Part horror, part comedy, part murder mystery, part political drama, part psychological drama, part family drama.
