How was it a comedy ?

I just watched this movie that I never head about before.

I liked it a lot, I found it original, while I expected a classic haunted house movie.

But I'm seeing people everywhere on this board saying it was funny... Uuh ? I watched it as a serious horror movie, what was funny exactly ? I mean, it's not Shaun of the Dead or Evil Dead 2. Scream, I would label it as a horror comedy too, but this one ?

What was funny, what were the gags ?

Ok. I'll try to get it next time I watch it. But I see people comparing it to other movies i found hilarious, like "Tucker & Dale vs Evil", that's why I feel like I saw a very different movie. Sure I smiled once or twice, I won't deny it, but it happens with many movies that are not comedies.

Right off the bat, Kylie's partner manages to knock himself out whilst trying to break into the cash machine.
The mum crashes into the back of their car, quite hard and plays it off as the "there's more damage to mine than yours" in a wonderfully mummish way.
Even when not explicitly funny, the script was wonderfully dry and sarcastic. Plenty of witty snipe.
Then when the dialogue is funny

Amos: You know, the closed mind is the worst defense against the paranormal, Kylie. What are you gonna do against a hostile spirit? You just gonna crack jokes?
Kylie Bucknell: No, I am going to smash it in the face.
Amos: You cannot punch ectoplasm.

Officer Grayson: All right, all right. First thing we need to do is to make a statement. Now, what exactly is this in relation to?
Kylie Bucknell: I was vacuuming in the house, and then I put the vacuum back in the cupboard, and I saw that there was this recess and it led to a secret room. And there was this guy in the walls. And he was pale. He has got black lips and a bung eye, and he is *beep* crazy. I swear to God, he tried to kill me and that is why I took off. And then I could not...
Officer Grayson: Hold on, hold on. You are going too fast here. Okay. Put vacuum cleaner back in cupboard. And the rest is a blur. What did you say?

When the lights go out and the mum starts flicking fuse switches? It was such a real moment, but so circumstantially bizarre that it massively tickled. The tone in their voices was magic, also. Then when Eugene pops up in his bedsheets, that was less scary and more a tongue in cheek laugh.

Toward the end, when Amos is trying to find Kylie in the house and Dennis is about to stab him in the back, Amos unknowingly takes the attempted murderweapon out of his hand to use as a lever!

Christ, the entire Dennis vs Kylie scene was hilarious. From blocking her knife with the glockenspiel, making cute sounds, to attacking his face with a cheese grater arm guard? That was utter genius. Then the mum stopping his knife attack with a laundry basket over the head?
It even ends in the most ridiculous, head exploding manner!

I have no doubt there are several moments I missed, but, it's amazing how many people didn't realise this was intended as a comedy.

A brilliant Kiwi piece of theatre and one many of us Brits massively appreciated

This bit was genius! But if you have to explain comedy to someone, they're never going to get it...!

Probably true

LOL. Brilliant indeed. It's unfortunate that this piece is underrated because many people can't appreciate it as it is, the way you do.

Admittedly this goes away around the time Eugene shows up.

No, it doesn't. The tone stays the same from beginning to end, including the final confrontation. I could be here all day and spoil the entire movie because almost every scene contains some kind of gag, but it would be a waste of my time. I just can't understand how anyone can be so blind to not see the humor in this when some of the jokes are even accompanied by cartoony sound effects (like when she throws that roof tile). What more could anyone need? A laugh track?

reply

I agree I never laughed once

reply

Well, you obviously have no sense of humor.

I think it's a stretch to call it a comedy, though there are moments and themes that are VERY funny. The problem is that there are also VERY long sequences that aren't funny at all. Most of the second act is played very straight and I don't think that's something that a comedy really does. But then, when blending categories I suppose there aren't really rules. But for my end, Tucker & Dale or Shaun of the Dead are examples of what I think of for "horror comedies"...they are consistently funny with human/scary moments mixed in. (Scream I'd just call a comedy). This movie though feels more like a horror film written by someone with an innate comedic sensibility. So the story and objective is to scare, but because humor is part of our existence, once can't avoid being funny now and then...and then punch it up for the screen. On the other hand, the epilogue felt a lot like that of Beetlejuice to me. Ah, who can say. It's scary. It's funny. It's engaging. It's a little human. It's a fun watch.

Kylie's face when she says, "Do they?" mockingly towards Amos.

The part where Kylie keeps holding her pee 'cause she thinks she's hearing noises.

Kylie: "And you just happened to be in the neighborhood?"
Amos: "No! (Amos opens his jacket to reveal he is still in pajamas) I live in the neighborhood!"

The part where Dennis walks up behind Amos with a knife and you are expecting him to get stabbed, but Amos just turns around and casually takes it from his hand.

Kylie's Mother: "Aren't you lucky to have all that fancy technology there on your foot! Quite spoiled."

Lots of funny moments in this!

There's a lot of dry humor in it. I can see how some people wouldn't think it's a funny movie but it does have it's moments if you can pick up on dry humor.

reply

The humour is very dry a lot of the time. A lot of British humour is like that, and I think Australian/NZ is very similar. I'm from the UK and I saw a lot of humour in it.

Not sure if Americans would get a lot of the subtle stuff.

I'm American, watched it three times and laughed harder every time.

American here and I thought it was quite funny.

Kylie's facial expressions and eye rolls alone were enough to make me laugh.

How could you not see the jokes? It's everywhere, even since the beginning.

Remember when they tried to rob an ATM, and the hammerhead flew and knocked her friend? That got even more hilarious when she puts a dynamite into the ATM and dragged his body to the car and then got jammed at the end.

You didn't find it funny that her parents let her sleep in a room where a murder took place before, and her mom didn't seem to realise how strange it was?

You didn't find it funny that she burnt a stuffed bear because she thought it's haunted? What about all the slapsticks with Amos?

I laughed a lot while I watched this. Too bad a lot of people missed the jokes.

reply

I also found it funny when the lights went out and the mother went to check the fuses. You heard a click then she said something along the lines of "I just tried the light switch - I'd forgotten why I'd come out here."

My first laugh out loud moment was after Kylie (through guilt) spent a couple of hours cleaning the house to perfection and then crashed through the cupboard completely trashing the kitchen. This led to the police station and it just got funnier from there.

^This.

I actually re-watched a part of the film on the next day and I realised I myself missed a few of the jokes. It was more entertaining the second time I saw it.

reply

I watched through it and found some parts funny, then I watched through it again and found the entire movie hilarious. I guess the first time through it's more horror than anything.

reply

Spot on! I enjoyed the hell out of it...not in a funny way one bit, though.
