All these shows, ALL OF THEM, are based in fantasy and not reality.

People like the characters in this show simply don't exist.

Suck my ass, Hollywood.

I say live and let live, but this show with all the transgendered stuff and in your face LGBT nonsense is flash in the pan. In a little while, everyone's going to have had their fill of it and it will all fade away into the background. Don't believe all the hype about bringing issues to the fore and all that, its just about cashing in on some trendy, topical nonsense that people are obsessing about just now.

reply

It's not trendy because the more people who can say they know transsexuals; family, friends, people they work with, people they live next to, the more there will be TV shows and movies and reality shows about the subject. It is not going away. Some people are honestly curious about it because it gets embarrassing for everyone when the wrong words come out by mistake. You forget to say He instead of She, stuff like that. It really does need to be talked about and taught to people.

Ummm more than 47 years after Stonewall LGBT people are STILL HERE idiot! We aren't going away anytime soon regardless of what you tea party jackasses think. We survived persecution during the Dark ages as well as by the Nazis in the 1930s and 40s, Anita Bryant and her "Save our Children" campaign, The AIDS crisis, Don't Ask Don't Tell, DOMA...The list goes on. Point being we are here to stay GET USE TO IT!!!

No one said they weren't here kid. I said all the movies and tv shows are flash in the pan. In a year or two, Hollywood will have forgotten about it and moved on to the next trendy fad. Straight white people, the audience that Hollywood loves to cater too, like to celebrate the cause du jour. Expecting it to last is a mistake. So LGBTQ or whatever they want to call themselves will be wondering what happened along with American Indians after Dances with Wolves, Transvestites after Priscilla Queen of the Desert, or any of a number of similar niche causes after their time in the sun.
After a few more mediocre movies or tv shows are released, people will start rolling their eyes, then some great new movie about some great new cause will come out and everyone will forget. No point getting butt hurt about it, its just the way it is.

Pretty much most mediums from the 70s and on have featured gay characters in one form or another. Pretty long time for a trend.

reply

Not really. You're emphasizing and noticing it more because that's what you're pre-occupied with.

reply

The only real dip was in the mid to late 80s due in large part to the Reagan era and the AIDS crisis but other than that gay characters have always appeared in television or movies at some point. Plus attitudes have changed from 30 years ago. Maybe in your little red state bubble they haven't changed but elsewhere they have.

reply

Point me to the statistics please. Otherwise you're trying to pawn your own personal viewing habits off as some kind of gay trend that's been around since the 70's. And pretending that whatever state I live in gets its own special movies and television does more to hurt your credibility than help it.

Regardless, up until the last year or two, any kind of LGBT presence in movies and television has been minuscule. There has been more recently, but face it, Bruce Jenner and the Kardashians, things like that have made transgender trendy. If you want to pretend that there's some huge tidal wave of transgender/gay culture that's everywhere, be my guest. My point was that its just a short lived trend like so many others.

You know for all the talk of us liberals as being ultra PC "snowflakes" you conservatives sure love to whine whenever a show or movie or social/political movement challenges your white, christian, and heteronormative view of the world.

The cause de jour is lesbians. You would think 50% of females are lesbians the way its been shoved down our throats the past 5-8 years in every single show and movie. Yes there are lesbians and I'm all for it, but its not original and not as common as 50% of the population. And you can have a present day drama without a lesbian couple in it. Ugh so sick of it.
