Maddie isn't introduced in the books until well into the series, but it's worked fine that they've had her from the start in the show.

And they've given the big clue in season two that answers very specifically your comments. She is "just like her dad." She's very focused, and takes things very seriously. She is still a teenager, and hasn't exactly figured out where he place in the world will be...but it's clear it will be somewhere near her dad's path.

The exact answer to your question: "which 15-16 year old would call her dad all the time on skype??"

Harry Bosch's daughter.

And that even omits the contribution of Elenor, who is poker player for a reason. She's a former FBI profiler with amazing instincts about people.

The actress who plays her improved a great deal in season two also. She looks a lot more natural and comfortable in the role.

i have a daughter who has, from a young age, been more mature than i am. so i don't find that very unbelievable.

I think they created her character to be chill and maybe a bit different, she has that tomboy vibe to it but not too overdone. I like her character and I think they wrote her character to be likable because many other shows teenage girls are always hated by the viewers (Becca in Californication, Dana from Homeland).

For ONCE!!!...we have a likable, well adjusted, teenage girl. I knew they existed somewhere in the universe. They are like unicorns on TV, for the most part. They dont exist. :)

Maddie is a breath of fresh air.

I read in some interview that the show runners and writer picked a non rebellious teen because they did not want to detract from the main character and HIS story and case(s).
He already has enough demons from the past...his child hood in foster care and his mother's murder and subsequent cover up.

They did not want to pile on a horrific daughter too on his plate.

Plus viewers are sick and tired of the idiot teen trope. Loving teens DO exist. They are as rare as hen's teeth. But to call the situation unrealistic is not right. I was a damn good teen growing up. I still did pretty much everything I wanted to do with out getting hurt, hurting others or getting arrested. I enjoyed my family always growing up.

I probably was at my worst when I was in collage due to extreme stress from huge work loads of courses and homework that was heaped on me. I hated my last two years of college...ALL WORK and zero play. I mean NO play. Sucked. I was not all that great to be around for those two years. Some of my highest stress years at such a young age too.

The show does have her texting and her father commenting on her thumb strength and speed as joke. I happen to really LIKE the character. I am quite glad she is written like she is.

I don't recall if the series makes it clear, but Bosch didn't even know about Maddie until she was around 14 as Eleanor left and didn't tell him she was pregnant.

So Maddie didn't live with him to grow the typical teenage resentment. She IS a typical eye rolling teen with Eleanor, but Harry is a new thing and easily becomes a "cool" dad.

Yes, Series 1 seemed to leave that aspect open-ended.

And especially from the get go, we see that Maddie is interested in police work, which is a direct carry over from her literary character. It's natural she'd want to maintain contact with her father.🐭

I think that is definitely different in the show. Afaik Eleanor left Harry like 3 years ago and went to hong kong.

But not telling Harry about his daughter? It should be criminal really. It's not that much different from kidnapping your baby. It would make me hate Eleanor.

I actually find her rather annoying. She's very clingy. Even though she knows her dad goes on undercover assignments and can't always get back to her calls right away, she still gives him a major guilt trip and he's constantly apologizing to her. Not much different from having an annoying wife. It's not like he works at Taco Bell for Christsakes.
