Thor: Ragnarok will easily pass 300M yet Justice League will struggle to reach 250M? How did WB fail so spectacularly?

I had really high hopes for WB and the DCEU but apparently these 2 milestones look like the case despite Thor only opening 30M more. It's crazy to think that the first team-up featuring some of the most popular superheroes ever couldn't even beat Thor's 3rd movie. What a crazy year it's been!

It has been a crazy year with Wonder Woman blowing away all other CBM's domestically. GOTG2 not getting anywhere close to a billion also surprised many.

What makes Wonder Woman's domestic box office performance a crazy year and what does that have to do with WB lagging in performance expectations and Domestic Box Office which is the real craziness?

Of the 2017 Comic Book Movies turned into films Logan an R rated movie did outstanding and:

GOTG Vol 2============= did $863 Mil WW
Spider-Man Homecoming ==== did $880 Mil WW
Wonder Woman ========== did $821 Mil WW

GOTG2 not getting anywhere close to a billion also surprised many.

That was another attempt to throw shade at the MCU by suggesting that somehow GOTGV2 underperformed at the WW Box office. I did a little googling and could not find an article with a $1 Billion dollar prediction or expectation for GOTGV2's worldwide gross. Who was surprised by that? You?

GOTGV2 outpaced GOTGV1 by almost $90 Mil in a competitive market and somehow you had to find a way to shade that? Again, there was no studio or industry belief that GOTG was a solid franchise and guaranteed $1 Billion dollar product.

But there was indeed an expectation that Justice League would be in the $1 Billion club by default. By some fan expectation JL was to be in the $2 Billion Club. The fact that Thor:Ragnarok is performing domestically better that JL for the moment is just STUNNING!! If Thor: Ragnarok out performs the Justice League as well internationaly and World Wide would be a failure on WB of monumental proportions. Will Justice League turn a profit? It appears it will but just barely. That in and of itself is an employment changer for suits at Time-Warner. There is now way you invest in an IP of the magnitude of The Trinity and the Justice League and only get back pennies on the dollar. That's a fire sale and somehow WB has left millions on the table by creating a not too well received product.

I applaud Marvel for taking a risk on Taika with not only Thor but the MCU. Are there some disenchanted fans? Yes. But they went to see the movie. WB has some unhappy campers with Justice League but they aren't even turning out to see the movie on a holiday weekend! Why are DC fans complaining instead of filling seats? They must not like the final product which is truly crazy.

I like your name. One of my favorite CB characters ever. :)

Now if we could only get a GOOD Silver Surfer and Galactus movie....

reply

Thus the name and yes SS is indeed one of my all-time favorite which is why the FF coming over to Marvel/Disney gives me hope for a Good-to-Great SS-FF-Galactus series of films. One can only dream...

And a proper Ben Grimm/Thing characterization "This Man, This Monster"!

Kind of off topic, but Thor was selling out at my local theatre over the weekend. I think most people were let down in Batman VS Superman and that mindset continued on.

Thor continues a slow but steady march to $300 Million.

"Thor" gave people who like Thor movies what they wanted - hot guys, spectacular CGI, humor and adventure. It's not a perfect film to say the least, but it definitely delivers twelve bucks worth of entertainment and connected with its target audience. That's what makes a movie profitable.

I haven't seen "JL" yet (next week), but it can't win. Either it's as lame as most of its DCEU predecessors and the target audience is sick of being disappointed, or it's better than its mostly terrible DCEU predecessors and the target audience is tired of the whole shebang because the series as a whole isn't giving them what they want. If it's a box-office disappointment, it's because it's suffering for the sins of its predecessors.

you better download it and save your money.

A friend who can't drive wants to see it, so we're seeing it when I can get away from my job.

Tell me, is it SO bad that another night of being housebound is more fun?

reply

Being housebound IS more fun. Once you realize the bad CGI [which is straight away] and the awkward way they intend to crack jokes, you'll want your money back.

reply

I never did see it in the theaters.

So if people wonder why it was disappointing at the box office, it's because people like me have decided the DCEU sucks in general.

reply

well, it does indeed suck.

reply

Justice League? That movie is as bad as its fans. Terrible.

As of yesterday Thor's daily box office is nervously close to JL. Yikes!! Just ~$130K between the two. Now I don't really expect JL to diminish to the point of falling behind Thor:Ragnarok but even that minimal amount of dollar distance is already stunning.

DC fans appear to not like their own films.
