Is this going to be a comedy?

Saw the trailer and it looks like they are making it out to be a comedy. Thor laughing and fighting in the arena as if he were a gladiator haha. The other Thor flicks were more serious so I'm surprised to see this one trying to be so funny.

Yeah, seems like it. I was surprised by the tone of the trailers. Like, what happened to Thor? Is Iron Man rubbing off on him or something?

reply

Taika Waititi said a few months ago that it wouldn't be a comedy-action movie, but that it certainly had comedic elements.
He mentioned Thor and Hulk were on a bit of a "road trip" across the galaxy, so I suppose that will come into play somewhat.

One thing is for certain, it will be different...

That's what it appears to be. Although Thor has always had his funny moments (it's worth noting that the first movie actually had some humor throughout), the comedic tone of this trailer was still a surprise. That being said, even though I love the trailer I'm expecting the movie to have a different tone than this trailer suggests. I don't necessarily wish for a darker movie (I think "The Dark World", a sequel which I like, was plenty enough) but one that is essentially more intense and explores new territory.

reply

The last two movies were also comedies. This isn't really anything new.

reply

But Thor wasn't a comedian in those movies and he wasn't a comedian in the Avengers movies as well.

reply

He wasn’t a comedian in this one either.

reply

Pretty much every Marvel film to date has been a comedy. I'm failing to see how this seems new to you.

reply

Not true. Every Marvel film has had comedic scenes but overall have been action movies at their core. From the trailers, however, this movie looks to have action scenes but overall be a comedy movie at its core.

reply

It really just looks like more of the same to me, to be honest.

reply

They're just highlighting funny parts for the trailer, but even with that, most of the trailer is pure action and destruction.

You could edit all the funny and amusing parts of Pulp Fiction into a trailer to make it look like a goofy crime comedy.

reply

Yeah, could be the case that the trailer I watched highlights funny parts. I saw another trailer and there was more action.

reply

Yeah, it's pretty much a goofy comedy.

reply

The MCU went full kiddy.

reply

I saw the trailer, I think it's the Galaxy Guardians influence... it works, it's what people want... it's fun...

No one cares about these movies being faithful to the characters or the comic books... anything goes... why not turn it into a buddy movie action comedy?

reply

So here we are. Yes, it is reminiscent of GOTG, but this one has Taika Waititi behind it. If this had to be a comedy (which I initially wasn’t overly excited about it), then they got the perfect guy to helm this movie.

From the outside it may appear like standard MCU (easier for many to attack its formula), but this Taika cat is one creative, unique, and funny bastard. After watching a few of his films, I knew that Ragnarok — despite the thought of having another Marvel comedy seemed banal to some — was going to be a lil’ different. I dare say... it was. He made a clever, sharp, refined, funny, and surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) intense film.

The Thor series needed a change, and Ragnarok felt fresh. Also in spite of the humor, to say the hero of the movie lost so much would be an understatement.
