Updated hype-meter for 2017

Guardians - 9/10
Spider-Man - 9/10
Ragnarok - 10/10

I think Marvel MIGHT have a 2.5 to 3 billion dollar year!

Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'...
...That's god damn right.

reply

2.5 should be the absolute minimum, I think the year could easily exceed 3 billion. However, the strength of the US dollar is a factor that could hurt this number even with great overseas ticket sales.

I think they'll total around 1 billion domestically.

I'm also super-hyped for Ragnarok!

My life has major plot holes.

reply

All three have potential of making 1 billion each its crazy. I'm most hyped for Ragnarök.

reply

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does and maybe Spider-Man: Homecoming, but I would be amazed if Thor: Ragnarok made that much.

reply

Ragnarok is the wild card of the three as far as box office goes.

reply

I'm guessing more like:

Guardians $1.2B
Homecoming $1.0B
Ragnarok $800M

Total $3B. If they all underperform, $2.5B. If they all are huge hits, $3.5B.

reply

Possibly yeah, although it's worth mentioning that Spider-Man: Homecoming is a Sony film, so it won't all be profit for Marvel.

reply

The first two Thor films were not even near that number. It would be great if this one broke some records, but I wouldn't dare to bet on it.

reply

This Thor movie features the Hulk in a large role, and Doctor Strange in a smaller role. This alone should be a big boost to the BO. It also has a great supporting cast, plus is a strong plot lead-in to next year's Infinity War. It's going to be much bigger than the other Thor movies.

I am tempted to agree with you, but there has been a lot of similar speculation before: f. e. "BvS contains both Batman and Superman, two most iconic comic book characters of all time, plus WW, sure it will come close to 2 billion" - and look what happened when the movie got bad reviews.

Also, Dr. Strange has the same core audience as Thor and didn't make much more money. I don't think there's many viewers who were uninterested in Ragnarok before but will only go because of Strange. Hulk, I think, is a different story, if he can pull the rest of Avengers viewers.

I think all will depend on the reviews. If it's not going to be received well, it's gonna earn similarly to Thor: The Dark World. That's still loads of profit, but not a billion. However, with amazing reviews, it might come close to a billion or pass it.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

reply

I agree. On top of my reasoning, I assume that it will be a great entertaining movie, with great reviews and word of mouth. With the MCU's track record recently, it's not a huge assumption - in fact I fully expect it.

Similarly I expect the Justice League to continue the streak of disappointment for DCEU fans. Against the odds, I think Ragnarok could actually surpass Justice League this November. I think the general audience will be drifting more and more to the MCU, as they realize the difference in quality.

Both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad made more money than The Dark World, reviews be damned, so I wouldn't be too sure about that.

However, if you proposed that 3 years ago, I'd argue there's no way that this could happen and that JL will double the money of any Thor. But now, well, it's not really that far fetched anymore and even if JL earns more, the difference in profit will IMO not be that big.

reply

I know, that's why its a wild card, if its really good $1b wouldn't be impossible, so I'm not counting it out just yet, nor making any bold predictions. The Dark World could've made more had it been better.

reply

The other factor that was mentioned regarding BO for all 3 movies is competition. What other movies come out around the same time. Which for Thor means that there's limited time before JL comes out. Even if JL 'stinks' it'll still get a lot of fans going along.

Guardians - 9/10
Spider-Man - 8/10
Ragnarok - 10/10

I think Marvel MIGHT get 2.5 to 3 hundred dollars from me alone in ticket sales this year!

reply

Technically Spider-Man: Homecoming is a Sony film though.

reply

Guardians - 9/10
Spider-Man - 8/10
Ragnarok - 10/10

I cannot contain the hype for this movie. I'd love it so much if Ragnarok cracked a billion, it's definitely possible if it gets fantastic reviews and word of mouth. Not to mention the added draw of the Hulk, Doctor Strange and that incredible cast. Fingers crossed!

reply

Right now, even without a trailer, I'm more hyped about Ragnarok than other ones. Guardians come second. Homecoming 3rd. I think Marvel could go 3b+ . With most potential is Homecoming(Spidey and Iron Man), then come Guardians(the first was loved) and Thor comes third, just because of its weak track record.
So Was I!

Ragnarok - 8/10

GOTG 2 - 7/10

Homecoming - 6/10

Whatever you are, be a good one.

reply

It will be 2019
the movie formerly known as avengers infinity war part 2: 2 billion (like just below force awakens)

reply

Guardians - 9.5/10
Spider-Man - 9/10
