Too many spoof movies that aren't funny.

I have definitely got a sense of humour but, am I in the minority that is bored with all the spoof movies.
The first two scary movies where Ok but they should have stopped there. I've tried watching many others since but always turn out to be very slapstick with stupid references to the movies they are portraying.
Why can't movie writers just use thier own imagination instead of just taking p#ss out of other writers original ideas.
Can anyone name any good quality spoof movies.

A good spoof movie usually has a plot of it's own and works as a comedy even if you don't get all the references. A lot of these rubbish ones now just copy whole scenes from films, add some stupid dialogue then (flimsily) link the scenes together and think job done. No creative thinking at all.

reply

I think you hit the nail on the head there! What blows my mind is who the hell is financing these trashy movies, and how on earth to they ever think they could make money. I just don't understand it.

Good point about good spoofs having their own plots. Space Balls is my favorite spoof; lots of sci-fi references but the plot and characters are unique. Scream was another fun one, then Scary Movie came along as a spoof of a spoof, which shows an even greater lack of creativity.

reply

Yes. space balls was good, and scream one and two (third got a bit silly and not bothered watching the fourth), and airplane also was good.
I even enjoyed a couple of the naked gun movies.
Would you see all these as parodies though, and not spoofs. Spoofs to me are such as epic movie, date movie, superhero movie, etc.

reply

Well most spoofs are made by people who have no ideas or talent of there own, so they try to scrape out a living by making fun of other people's work. Its kind of sad but i guess its better than being a prostitute or a politician.

reply

its probably because they way they are acted they play spoofs. The best spoof movies are the ones where their characters are serious, real but the world around them and events are a spoof.

A fairly decent one that comes to mind is not another teen movie.

The best one would have to be Airplane!
That's still funny 35 years later. And you don't need to have seen the truly awful Airport disaster movies to enjoy Airplane. As someone wrote earlier: a good spoof is able to stand alone. Will anyone remember this movie in 35 days, let alone 35 years?

I can only guess this was either a hurried cash-in that cost next to nothing, and they hope enough stoned, drunk or idiot movie-goers (or a combination of all 3) will go to before they realise how bad it is to make a small profit. Or it is solely a tax write-off for the movie studio.

Blooadbath at the House of Death.
While it has aged some, that is how spoofs should be done. If you're really into your classic horror the gags still work. Parody spoofing, not whole scenes while still having it's own storyline.

Also when I watched it as a kid it was as equally scary as it was funny. A horror comedy should have scares as well as laughs. Todays parodies are somewhere between and episode of family guy and a MAD Magazine spoof, while failing at being as entertaining as either.

I wish a modern writer and director could recapture what made parodies from a few decades ago work.

I will respect your opinion. But I probably still think it's mind numbingly stupid.

I like spoof movies when done well, I kind of see it like a fan film or amusing how they acknowledge something we all noticd
