I've seen this basic plot on a series before...

It was called "Search" starring Hugh O'Brian back in (yeah I'm that old) 1973. The series pilot was from a TV movie in 1972 called "Probe." The gimmick in that one also got tiresome. Check out the storyline! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069125/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_28)
