Agent X vs The Player

The first episode looked like a 90 minute movie cutted down to 45 mins, because many scene "transfers" didn't make sense. They tried too hard to get as much as action as possible in short time, and forgot to care about whats between.
The action itself is as generic as a cheap action b-movie.

"The Player" TV series was recently cancelled after only 9 episodes, and had much better action, better stunts, better actor, better acting and production quality.
That series had 2 main guys that kicked ass and was superior to this Agent X guy.

Now, it would be really bad if Agent X lasts, while The Player was barely shown.
That would shows what people really want to see.

I liked The Player as well, and seemed to be really finding its stride before it was cancelled. As for production quality, a network show probably has a higher budget than a basic cable show, and the higher ratings expectations that go with it. Still, I like Agent X a lot and have liked Jeff Hephner since he starred in a little seen gem called Easy Money on the CW.

But, The Player's premise, rich folks betting on his success or failure in 'real life or death scenarios', is laughably futuristic sci-fi in a contemporary setting.

At least, a VEEP directing a tiny secretive organization is reasonably and fantastically plausible.

"The Player" had three that kicked ass and it was just getting good when they pulled the plug.

"Agent X" jumped into the action almost immediately, probably to hook an audience that might get bored easily. I like what I see so far. And I think the production values are excellent.

reply

Yeah. The second episode of Agent X was better than the first.

As you say there was actually a third action person in main roles in The Player.. Cassandra of course. ;)

reply

Yes and I had been waiting for them to develop Cassandra's character so the show would be better. Finally, they did and the show disappeared.

IDK... I only saw this advertised on the back of Entertainment Weekly, and was piqued... yet totally spaced until 5? weeks into it's Run..

I wanted to Like Player as I've been following Winchester since he had a short lived show called Crusoe, some 5+ years back...

But watching it, the constant 'who can you trust?', double swerve, stuff felt way too convoluted... this may be the age of the anti-hero after Dexter and Walter White... You want them to win even if their game is 'bad things'; but when you can't trust your heroes, how can you root for them regardless f the target?

the shows had much the same core dynamic Stone/Snipes... Hephner/Winchester... McRaney/Wakefield...

but as noted... an off books Plausible deniability Special Operative is easier to buy than Billionaires Gambling on Crime... the 'rules' on Player also seemed more arbitrary

Every episode of Agent X was a 45 min B-movie, you could see from the start that it only a matter of when it was going to get cancelled. The Player was ok except for the plot which was highly ridiculous. This thing is that the plot for the Player could have been changed to that of Agent X and it probably could have lasted

reply

You are right about that. "The Player" should have been a agent series, and it would work well. It was already some kind of agent series which didn't need the gambling part at all.
Wesley Snipes could still be a boss.
