Really hit and miss

So, I really want to like this show but it's so hit and miss. For one a lot of the characters aren't really likable from a comedic stand point, mainly because so many of their jokes are trying so hard to be "edgy" and nothing else. Also, a lot of the characters are so off..like the principal for example, she's supposed to be really ugly, yet she is not bad looking at all? In the end the only bit that had me laughing was the pepper spray one.

In the end I guess I was looking for it to be somewhat if an unofficial a continuation of "George Lopez" which I have never stopped watching reruns of since it stopped airing. But sadly, it feels like this show did the oppposite of everything that made me love his previous show which also adds to my sadness because it feels like it really was trying to be some kind continuation based on how the previous show ended.

I guess I'll still end up watching it hoping for more, but I don't think anything will come of it in the end.

I think it's more that the principal scares him, not that she's supposed to be ugly. Didn't one of the other characters think she was hot?

It's also the first episode, usually shows like this take a few episodes to really come together.

I do feel like this show tries to imitate George Lopez in some ways, and is different in other ways. The mom seems like they wanted to write another character like Benny, but it didn't work as well. I liked Danny Trejo in the show though, so that gives me hope. The whole pepper spray scene was good

I also really want to like it. I was happy to see it on FX because they are more lenient with "edgy" content. My hope is that the show becomes more like Mr. Lopez's stand-up. I saw him live in DC a few years back and nearly peed my pants. I'm bilingual so the Spanglish just makes it funnier to me.

Overall, I liked it. The first show is always the hardest because everything is new to the cast and viewers alike. I'm a long time fan of Danny Trejo and enjoy when he does the lighter stuff. "Tío" and "Junior" complement each other well. I thought "Concepción" was a bit stereotypical but that could have been done to prove a point. Although I like Jenn Lyon, I found "Mackenzie" was very sarcastic and snarky; again, I'm hoping this is being done to prove a point. I guess time will tell.

I will continue to watch and am really hoping this blossoms into a smart comedy that can help dissolve some of the negative stereotypes that many have of Latinos. Best of luck to Mr. Lopez and his team.

it was lame... canned laughter at things that weren't the least bit funny... and his whole repertoire consists of stereotypical... insulting and borderline racist barrio jokes... george lopez is the hispanic equivalent of stepin fetchit... but the entertainment industry doesn't care about that... this series has committed the utmost entertainment industry crime... it just isn't funny...

I echo many of the aforementioned comments. I'm on the fence, not sure if I like it or not. It's got its moments, both good and bad. I guess this is how I break it down:

BAD
-Rehash of Lopez' original show. I liked the original but prefer he go in another direction.
-Lopez' mother isn't old enough. Plus her character is not that funny; just insulting, unless you're into that.
-Mackenzie: stereotypical Real Housewives type. Nothing against the actress herself, but the character doesn't grab me.
-Concepcion (the principal): Let me first say I LOVE the actress. Loved her in The Bridge, which I hope she's still a part of. But this man-eating character is too outrageous, would she not be up for sexual harassment or something? That said she needs to tone it down and be more a part of the show.
-The show has yet to delve into the La Energia thing. It's been 3 or so episodes and it's only been glanced over periodically. I can't figure out if Lopez is a marketeer or a teacher.

GOOD
-Trejo and Zayas work well together and have great chemistry.
-Lopez' kid: he needs more of an arc or something but I can't fault a child for bad performances. He's a kid after all and he's not the star in the least.
-Lopez himself: indeed he's carrying this show but sometimes a line is crossed from starring in a show to carrying it. Lopez is clearly a funny guy but in this particular show he's the latter. Outside of Trejo and Zayas he has virtually no solid supporting cast.
