Damnit!

THEY SKIPPED THE BEST PART OF THE BOOK! THE BEGINNING WAS FREAKING AWESOME! They just jumped to the middle.

The story is told in 4 different movies unless you mean they jumped to the middle of Book # 2. Movie adaptations are by necessity never identical to the book(s) as they have to cram the gist of the book into 60-120 minutes.

SEE:
1. Flowers in the Attic
2. Petals on the Wind
3. If There Be Thorns
4. Seeds of Yesterday

I think the OP is referring to what they skipped in the second book for this particular film (Petals). 😕

Yeah, you are probably right. I meant "Petals" and corrected my prior message but I had #4 (Seeds) on the brain because I just watched it today.

None of the films impressed me but since I had watched the first one, then the second thinking it might be better (Not), and finally the final two since I needed an ending to this soap opera. 😎

Are you a fan of the books? I have to admit that even though I was disappointed by the four films on one level...I was happy on another that we finally had filmed versions of the entire series. It did allow me to introduce a whole new audience of my family and friends to the Dollanganger saga. 😞😃

But anyway...here's to waiting another few decades before someone (hopefully) decides to remake the entire series (as four individual mini-series) and really do justice to the books! 😔

No, haven't read the books but I did watch the 1987 film a long time ago and when the Lifetime version came out I decided to Netflix it and watch all 4 of them.

I can't really say if the 1987 film was better or worse than this version of Flowers as it was so long ago I can't remember much about it except I remembered the basic plot when watching this version. Here are some of the cast from the 1987 version.

Louise Fletcher ... Grandmother
Victoria Tennant... Mother
Kristy Swanson ... Cathy
Jeb Stuart Adams... Chris
Ben Ryan Ganger ... Cory
Lindsay Parker ... Carrie

It's a 5 book series. The last one is probably the best. I was pissed because they skipped Paul and how Cathy became a dancer! The pregnancy she had with Chris.. Too much good stuff. They also rearranged stuff. :( I read the books so many times, I can almost quote it entirely.

reply

Sorry, yeah I know there are five books...but I was referring to a remake of the series as depicted by Lifetime. Lifetime announced very early that GoS would not be filmed as part of the series but only the four titles written solely by V. C. Andrews. It hasn't helped that recent years have seen an increased number of fans who have disowned the book from the series amidst claims that Neiderman (who supposedly finished the manuscript) had butchered the story (which would explain the continuity and inconsistencies). 😮

Personally, I have always loved GoS...and feel that a filmed version of the prequel would really have helped fans of FitA (1987) to understand Burstyn's portrayal of Olivia. But hey ho...not going to happen!

The pregnancy she had with Chris.
Yep...that's also hotly debated amongst a lot of fans. 😝

But why cut out the best part? GoS may not have been completely written by Andrews but it still had her feel to it. She started writing alot of books and stopped half way because of an idea for another book. But GoS made the whole Dollanganger series really shock you! It also made you hate the mom even more and feel sorry for the grandma. I love that book.

reply

Yeah. I love GoS... 💗

Just a little titbit of information...but did you know that this:

She started writing alot of books and stopped half way because of an idea for another book
...is actually now considered a fallacy! Neiderman has previously stated that V. C. Andrews did not actually leave any unfinished manuscripts and that the subsequent novels are his and his alone! 😟

Shocking...I know! Especially as I grew up with the belief that she had left countless unfinished manuscripts in a vault that were eventually finished by Neiderman! And that was always such a fascinating concept for me...! Neiderman's statement was neither clarified or denied by the family, but it has been announced that any unfinished outlines by V. C. Andrews were exhausted many, many years ago... 😞

EDIT: In other news...did you know that FitA was not the only novel to be based on a true story! Apparently, Heaven and My Sweet Audrina are also considered to be based on factual events! 😮

You need to stop... Just stop right now. My mind is blown. True stories? I NEVER KNEW!!

I still like some of his stories. Lol

They cut alot from book 2, ALOT. Book two spans a few years. But they cut out everything with Paul and that irrked me so bad. This was one of my favorite in the book series and they cut soo much out. I understand that movie wise it has to be changed and cut down but man.. they really screwed this one up for me. Movie Julian was a lot nicer then book Julian too. grr.
