Cromwell as good guy?

As an Irishman, I am tickled by the notion of Cromwell as saviour of democracy. "My father served Cromwell, yadda yadda..."

Cromwell was not a 17th century Che Guevara. He cracked down on the Diggers, and had no time for extreme puitanism.

Interesting to see the Merry Monarch portrayed a such a bad egg.

Your mention of diggers not being explained will pass the larger audience by who may think Cromwell hated Australians prior to discovery of that particular eventual [enforced]home to so many of your countrymen.

I usually record whole series such as this and view in a sort of marathon way. So know not if in fact Diggers were mentioned. Viewing a whole series over short period is useful for the ageing person with memory weakness. This is precisely why so much of an episode of anything these days is full of what has happened and what is perhaps going to happen next time. Annoying when you are going to view the next episode in moment.

I do hope that those who have an interest do choose to look at the information that is available about the many [real] story threads that surround the times this is trying to entertain us with.

Although you may feel that as Irish your knowledge which will not in any way be coloured by oral or even written traditions much is slowly coming to light about so many things we thought were historical fact. Cromwell is certainly seen as one of people who caused major changes in national thinking. England is seen as the nation which may led in democracy. It is yet to be seen just perfect democracy can become because as we all know it is such a very hard thing to really define. For one example it can be read that in countries such as Ireland and Britain less that the 51% I believe is the winning number in our elections and in fact spinning the numbers shows that the winning party is not desired by a greater percentage than even 51%. More like 60%. Proportional representation might seem a good idea but is really only what it says and means that potentially in the case of Britain parties which are 'hated' get a voice.

Science is always ready to update its 'FACTS' as and when a 'known' fact changes. History is amenable to this as well as seen by a very recent fact change. My last knowledge of Richard the Third was that his bits slept with the fishes and that was mentioned in the last few minutes of a documentary [wars of the roses] albeit about twenty years old narrated by brain blessed on one of his quieter days.

The recent [not by Tony Robinson who must be kicking himself] documentary about Richard being under a car park was although a drawn out wonderful bit of history being found and changed.

I would love to be that fly on the wall through time to know the exactness of events other than what we have been taught. This is where Derek Acorah and his unique wonderful skills should be used. We would have found Richard in no time as he could have told us exactly where he had been chucked. He should be looking for King Johns treasure in the Wash. I think he sold it or it was stolen by his companions on the trip.

I was a weekly attending Sunday School Child brought up in a religion that Cromwell was not fond of Namely Presbyterian. I learned the Catechism of this branch of the Christian faith as I suppose all branches have. Learned by rote of course as are all prayers and the like within these controlled areas of[mental abuse ?] and as some [so many] unfortunates know downright physical abuses in the name of Jesus. Due to much gleaning and opening of mind I for one see that those days were indoctrination to be part of a club that lined other pockets and it still goes on with so many giving it their blessing.

Much learned in that way so many of us know is really quite false. So much of what we believe through our versions of the past are also suspect.

I could not be party to the disbelief regarding the final solution. I am not amenable to superstitious lore or witchcraft not do I believe in the existence of Satan or his minions unless they be evil humans.

I do however believe in searching for updates in historical knowledge that become fact [for that day anyway].

I recommend even using Wikipedia to research the majority of past knowledge. I think the inaccuracies in this site are mostly to do with disrespect or bigging up of persons living.

The Stuart period is interesting and for this purpose is from Mary Queen of Scots 1542 through to the death of Queen Anne 1714 [yes I looked it up but I did know Anne's death year]. Of recent real interest was the documentary series by Lucy Worsley 'FIT TO RULE'. This showed the illnesses that have plagued all the royal Dynasty's probably since 1066 of course and the odd lack of ability to produce male heirs which is the very cause of most of our nations [British Isles]disturbances. Annoying to be included in that description is it not?

This lady has brought us a few series giving her perceptions and adding in the presently known facts. Interest in history will not go unrewarded viewing her presentations which I doubt have any preferential leanings.

Hope the few viewer here might have ago at real history.

I believe that this show is a continuation of The Devil's Whore. If you watch that show (I highly recommend it: Andrea Riseborough, Peter Capaldi, Dominic West, Michael Fassbender), you may find Cromwell to be quite unpalatable.
