We watched Anzac Girls on Acorn here in the U.S. I just hit it up on our local public television station, but it was called The Crimson Field. Is it the same program? And., as an aside, why change the title?
"Anzac Girls" is an Australian production about Australian women in the Great War nursing ANZAC troops.
"Crimson Field" is about British women nursing soldiers in northern France during the Great War.
"Anzac Girls" is based on a book, and the women in the show are real people from history--their names are the same and the series tells their real stories.
"Anzac Girls" includes I believe (if memory serves) the "what happened to them after the war" life stories.
"Crimson Field" while based on history, is a fictional account.
"Crimson Field" also was planned to be a mulit-series story, to take the women through the war.
Unfortunately, the BBC did not find the ratings on Sunday night that the series earned to be worthy of even a second series to take us further into the war with the women.
Ergo, it was cancelled abruptly and the story was left totally hanging. A real shame.
In the 100th anniversary year of the war, the series was supposed to honor women who served as VADs and the men they served. And it was intended to portray 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. But we barely got started, before it was cancelled.
Thank you so much for your reply. I'll still watch "Crimson Field" but now I won't be so startled by the abrupt ending. I have a great uncle who died in the trenches of France so this program is of particular interest to me.
I always see you on the boards I read, so am quite certain Anzac Girls would be something up my alley. (Plus, I also share your enthusiasm for Gregory Fitoussi, who looks just like my boyfriend.) Thanks for bringing it up, although your OP is about a year old now. Still, never to late to catch a good show!
So far, The Crimson Field is quite compelling. Such a shame there won't be another series. 😞
