Glad Kitty got cancelled

Too bad for the rest of the show. I really enjoyed this first episode except for her character. Why would she volunteer to serve if she does not want to follow the rules. I was hoping the matron would rip her a new one. But this is television land so the big tough matron bows to this lowly volunteer and everything turns up roses. Ugh!

Scarecrow, scarecrow, the kings men fear my name!

Because sometimes the "boss" is not always right.

I have only watched the first episode. Kitty was in the right. The matron did seem to be going out of her way to humiliate the new nurse and Kitty stood up for her.

The rule against wearing rose water was interesting. Did people really believe that scent would somehow drive men crazy with lust?

The others could follow the rules, why not her? There are a lot of people I would cheer for In those situations but something about her character was very off putting.

Kitty acted as though the rules didn't apply to her.

When she walked into a surgery the doctor specifically told her to leave, and she just stood there defiantly. He finally he had to yell at her to get out.

What was her problem?

"Insanity runs in my family. It practically gallops."

Men often play a similar role to Kitty, the aloof person who doesn't follow all the rules. They are usually viewed as heroes or even likable characters. Kitty has actually broken very few rules and she was punished when she did. After being punished, she expressed remorse. In many movies her part would have been played by a male would have broken far more rules before viewers expressed any dislike.

I like her. She has an interesting backstory and seems to be growing as a person.

Me too. Matron and Sister were both prejudiced against the vads before they even arrived, because they weren't in the army. It appeared they intended to treat them badly (bullying, undermining, punishing) etc. because that was what had been done to them. But soon we see that matron is made of better stuff than that. Sister is most definitely as bad as that, and even worse. She's angry at the world and deviously plotting to make the rest of the world suffer so she can an derive her sick pleasure from their suffering. The commander even tells matron to make sure sister isn't too hard on the volunteers.

Nurses were not supposed to be frivolous. They couldn't wear perfume or makeup.

And, yes, frankly, they did. These men had been out in the field for long periods of time without female companionship. Also, a lot of the VADs arrived at the front with stars in their eyes, thinking they were going to flirt with the men and it was going to be like a little garden party. They learned quickly enough that it wasn't.
