This was so much better than Supernatural

After this finished...I decided to try get into supernatural so I got myself season one and couldnt watch it past episode 6....Constantine was so much better. The character, the storylines, the dialogue...everything! Just imagine how could it could get with a few more episodes under it's belt

You need to give Supernatural another chance. It really didn’t pick up until after it was picked up for a full season and they could delve into the show’s mytharc more deeply.

Dude, it’s Beacon Hills.

Season one struggled to get past the whole monster of the week thing, in my honest opinion it didn't really get into its stride until a quarter way through season two, keep going it gets better.

reply

They are right that it does get much better. Give it another go but I would recommend stopping after season 5. Kripke planned on ending it after the 5th season and you can tell. They wrapped the main storyline up with 5 seasons but then it started to get silly. It really went downhill after that.

reply

Supernatural does not get better. After season one or maybe two they brighten the colors and try too ditch a darker tone and add a ten minutes feelings session at the end of every episode for the 70% female audience it has. Listening too these two whine about their feelings is what made me stop watching after they ruined the big fight they built up for Michael and lucifer. (Spoiler). They fall into a hole that's the fight what a waste. So move on this show is mostly for the ladies too stare at the two main dudes and some light demon stuff too keep men from losing their minds.

reply

they didnt brighten the colors til season 6 or 7. From the second half of season 1 to the end of season 5. Supernatural is an awesome show.

reply

While I agree with most people in this thread that the show was terrific until the end of season 5 and then took a distinct turn for the worse, yes they did brighten the colours starting with season 3. Just compare any two episode from seasons 1 or 2 with later ones and you will see the difference immediately.

That said, Supernatural was already far superior to Constantine even in its first season. Yes, there were a whole lot of monster of the week episodes back then without pretty much any connection to the overall plot, far more than in later seasons, but the incredible chemistry between the two leads, the grim setting, the incredible soundtrack and several outstanding episodes that did in fact already link to a larger plot made it a great show early on.

Who are these Michael and Lucifer characters you speak of and what's that--demons? I only ever noticed the two main dudes. I'm going to have to re-watch to figure out what I missed.

reply

Seriously? Michael is the number one archangel and Lucifer is only the devil himself that appears in only the in about 12 of 22 episodes in season 5. Makes me question if you watched it at all or if it's just some weird attempt at trolling.

reply

yep. the show become a chick show. most of the people that watch it are women.

It did go downhill after 5 but picked up again from 9.

I never warmed up to Supernatural, I found it to be a bit too formulaic but I don't want to demean fans of that show.

In any case, I am really sad to see that Constantine is not scheduled to return. It was fresh and had a little bit of that comic book feel to it which I really liked. Perhaps it was Zed's frantic drawings, that was always a nice touch along with the music.

I'll compare this to Grimm, only because it was on the same NW. I watch every episode of Grimm and still enjoy it but not in the same way that I like Constantine. If I DVR'd both episodes, I would always watch Constantine first.

Both Constantine and Gotham were my very favorite new shows in the past few years.

(I just started watching 'Better Call Saul' and despite a rough first episode it is very good, of course that is a much different type of show.)

After ten seasons, clearly you are in the minority.

If "Supernatural" were on NBC, it would have lasted ten episodes.

reply

Thank god it's not on NBC then or my British self would be distraught!

@LoneWolfAttack

Interestingly enough, some of the creators of Supernatural has said that the Constantine comics were an influence on Supernatural itself, and that the angel's Castiel's trenchcoat look was modeled after JC's fashion look. That being said, i liked Supernatural for a long while, but lost interest in it----the ones I saw last year with the devil (who's always looked to me like a white British version of Will I. Am from the Black-Eyed Peas) and the other demon characters going head to head with Castiel did keep me hooked for a minute. I haven't really watched it in the last year, though. I do find it amazing how Supernatural is still going strong after all these years, having survived the transition from the WB to the CW, and all that. And, yeah, it would have never lasted as long as it has on a major network---that's true.

Supernatural is okay in the first five seasons, but I never thought it was a particularly great show.

I find the writing kind of weak in both plotting and dialogue.

first 5 seasons of supernatural is some of the best tv i have ever seen

so no Constantine is not better not even close

reply

And how you would know this?

Did Constantine get 5 seasons to compare it?

Or you forget how the season 1 of Supernatural was?

Try watching just the first season and tell me that it wasnt a mediocre drama.
