Do You Think We'll Get A Clear Answer?

Last season we were left with a lot of evidence but still nothing was solidified. Personally I'm still not fully convinced that Aubrey did it.

Now that this seasons, just like the last, the crime has already happened and it doesn't look like we'll get any clear flashbacks on what really happened at that party.

So do you really think we'll get a definitive answer on if he was raped and by who?

Personally I didn't mind the ending. I like well written open endings. But I don't want this to be a trend for every season.

Great men are forged in Fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame.

We got a clear answer in the first season. Maybe you didn't like it, maybe it wasn't the answer you wanted, but it was clear.

So yes, I think there'll be one this season too.

"She didn't make it. There was a detour... through the Twilight Zone."

""We got a clear answer in the first season"" - i've watched it twice and still don't know who committed the murder. did aubrey do it? and was she really raped by her brother or step brother or whatever he is?

reply

I'd like to know the answer too. Looks like Hurricane Helen is only striking once here. Strange.

This isn't a Who did it type of crime show. It never was.

I think when people grasp that concept, it will be liked even less since people want to know what actually happened and want the ones responsible for it brought to justice.

We never fully got that with Taylor's "rape".

reply

I think it plays true to life as we really don't know the truth about certain matters and are left to judge situations ourselves. We know people can be falsely accused or people can get away with a crime. But the show was about the actions of the people surrounding it and the measures they take.

Or someone can seem guilty until their side of the story is heard.

As was done with Eric seeming guilty of raping Taylor.

In Taylor's mind (more though of his mother's) he was raped since not being in control of his actions, he couldn't say No or Stop.

But in Eric's mind, he was giving Taylor what he had been wanting and asking for in his texts.

Then the situation escalated from there on how it involved others around them.

IMO, I think there was more to it after involving Wes ... but the show didn't really go that route like I think they should have.

My opinion is that between the two there was a misunderstanding of consent and both were telling the truth or what they believe. I lay most of the blame on Taylor's mother as she was the one who refused to stop her pursuit and went against Taylor's wishes. Taylor seemed content not wanting to take it further and was starting to get back to normal and happy with Evy and his mother basically killed that progress. I thought a storyline that involved Wes having more involvement would have made sense especially with the way he was behaving.

Having both be males was a masterstroke of the writers because people are so confused as to how react. If this were a male/female thing, there wouldn't be this discussion on whether it was rape or not.

A woman sends multiple messages to a potential sexual partner saying how rough she likes it but when it comes down to it she doesn't want to and he does it anyway?

But, as with most rapes, it's he said/she said and that's exactly what this ultimately was too.

reply

That's what I had thought. We need to think of this like we are sitting on a jury & have to decide. Who is telling the truth? Without us actually being there, we have to go off of what we think is the truth. To me, that's why they ended it the way they did. All season, we as viewers had differing opinions in all the situations that occurred. We should think of the ending that fits "our own" narrative.

Fans seem apt to dialogue on guilt and the legal process, however American Crime is not Law and Order If we were spoon fed sentences handed down for all the misdeeds, then the show would be passing judgment. I don't think that is what American Crime intended to do.

Debating whether Taylor should take the plea deal, how much time Taylor should serve, whether Eric got in the stranger's car, etc., might be missing the point of epi 10 and the whole season.

This show was never about showcasing the legal process for determining guilt. Sure, rape likely happened, a shooting certainly happened, drug dealing occurred and so on. But American Crime looks at moral and social issues apart from the laws.
