Here's what really, really scared me:

...learning from IMDB that Michael Palin is only 71.
Should've used sunscreen when he gallivanted around the world for his travel shows....

I think he looks pretty good for his age. Although to be fair, I thought he was supposed to be in his 80s in this, so maybe that's why!

reply

We don't yet know how old he is. In episode one he didn't give away his true age ('I'm 80-something'), but in last night's there were three telegrams from HM the Q suggesting he was far older. Plot thickens.

Yes, I meant from the first episode - I was surprised when he said "I'm in my eighties" because he didn't look it. Now obviously there's probably a good reason why - I hope all is explained, last night's episode didn't really move the story on much

I disagree with the OP's implication that Michael Palin doesn't look young for 71- I think most other people must think otherwise too.

That's one particularly interesting thing about this story. He's a 71-year-old who looks younger, playing an "80-odd" year old, who has telegrams from the Queen going up to 110! The timeline seems right for the latter. PC Fairholme spotted a photo of the Asian woman in a photo from 1914, looking about the same age as the other photo with the child (supposedly Tom) looking about 10. So born about 1904. The photo with his wife from 1950 looks spot on as well age-wise, as Michael Palin's look is from when he did his first travel series Around The World In 80 Days towards the end of the '80s.

The second episode maybe seemed slower as it concentrated a lot more on character development, except leaving modern-day Tom as a bit of a mystery, so leaving us with them to try and work him out.

I'm wondering what's keeping him 'young'? Anyway, I love it. Great atmosphere and acting. A minor criticism is the outside of the police station looked too new and tidy compared to the inside- more like a modern college exterior. And what a brilliantly tatty cop shop on the inside. It made Life On Mars look like CSI:Miami. And Fairholme's boss looked like he'd time-travelled from 1962!

Well spotted, Martin. I have to admit I completely failed to pick up on the possible time element of the story. Let's all check it out tomorrow.

For me the only faulty touch concerning that was when a photograph of the young Tom was briefly shown. Of course it was really a photo of the young (and smiling) Michael Palin, probably aound his Monty Python days. The mood, fortunately equally briefly, was broken then. I half expected him to declare that nobody expected the Spanish Inquisition. Overall, though, I think he's acting the part really well.
