Did Tom Parfitt diewhen he was 10?

I'm confused.

reply

Same here. If he did die when he was 10 would he be seen by all the staff and residents of the care home?

reply

No Tom didn't die when he was 10. In fact he was a lot older than people thought he was hence all the birthday cards from the queen. He was supposed to be about 110. He was separated from Isha when he was very young and my understanding was that when she found out his parents had died in the bombardment of Scarborough she went to find him but the ship hit a mine off the coast. He died at the very end with Isha in the pond when they were reunited.

reply

Minor clarification. She was on the ship going back to India (not to him) when she died, she came back from the dead to take care of him. She wasn't on her way to him, but was probably conflicted about leaving him alone.

I'm not certain if she knew his parents had died before she got on the ship, but it seems she did. The Bombardment of Scarborough (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Scarborough,_Hartlepool_and_Whitb y) was from the sea (ie, not an air raid) on December 15/16 1914. She probably read about it in the papers (he says their names were published), so she would have gotten on the ship knowing he was all alone, and then she died on December 25th.

What a welcome and refreshing change to see some genuine thriller/horror on BBC1. Ashley Pearce's directing was spot on. A relentless suffocating gloom and a lurking horror were slowly cultivated. Lacing the drama with plenty of jumpy moments made this mini series a prime example of the genre at its very best.

Loved the realism, the way everything felt oddly plausible. The focus on character development and creeping pace was marvelous and much appreciated in this age of CGI and explosions.

I only hope the beeb make more like this for those of us hungry for substance amidst the style.

reply

I didn't see any substance- it was all style. Relentless gloom, lurking horror and jumpy moments have to be tied into something meaningful. And there wasn't anything. Nothing seemed plausible to me, and I didn't see much character development. This was all plot and little character, and as I say style over substance NOT substance over style.

reply

On the contrary, it went to great lengths to establish a lot of ''substance'' as you put it.
Maybe your hearing aid wasnt working properly. Yeah, the more i think about it that's proberbly what it was. Recharge.

I'm not really particularly old- it's just a phrase taken from an old song. But it isn't funny to make light of deafness and old age. This is just a TV programme. If you want to discuss it don't be ageist, or discriminatory against other minorities.

reply

Well said about ageist and discriminatory views. Don't worry there are many people who don't think like that. I am one of them. Anyway I thought remember me was a good overall but I was left a bit confused about the specifics of the story.
