Are people honestly really looking forward to this?

I love the MCU and Scarlett as Black Widow but honestly this is just getting to the point where some of these new MCU flicks are just being made only for the publicity and the money. This film should've honestly been made years ago and they wait until they kill her character off to give her her own film. I get it that this takes place before Endgame but if they wanted to make a BW film after Endgame, it would've been better to have it as an origin story for the character rather than just a film about a series of events the character went through in between Civil War and Infinity War.

I find it a little baffling that some people may consider this to be the most anticipated film of the year. I'm way more excited for films such as No Time to Die and Dune.

reply

I am really looking forward to it but mainly because of Scarlett. I think the film will be good too but it is indeed true that the movie is long overdue and that they should have done it years ago. But better late than never as they say. I also think this will be the last we see of Scarlett in the MCU so it is worth it for that as well.

reply

I understand. Ill definitely see this film no matter what since I'm a huge supporter of the franchise and the character itself. I just think it should've at least been released before Infinity War since it takes place before that film and I also thought that Endgame was already a perfect send off for her character. As much as I love Scarlett, I just think Marvel just needs to move on and let some things go and focus on these new characters now. I'm sure the film will be pretty good but if I'm being honest, the trailers don't even look that great. I like the grounded thriller like approach they seem to be taking with this film but the sequences in that snowy base location just looks ridiculous with all that CGI and destruction following right back to that typical superhero film trope.

reply

I think it is a "have to" movie, retire Scarlett and introduce a younger black widow.

In comic books Black widow is resistant to aging, Scarlett Johansson is not. It can't go on (Her death was at the end of credit).

reply

I would have enjoyed it after winter soldier. Right now, it's kinda late.

Add to that the behavior of Disney last years. The Gina Carano incident was the last straw. I'll pass.

reply

Yeah I agree. I just think this film is being made mainly for the money since they decide to release it now after all these years. I love Scarlett as Black Widow but these original generation of the MCU characters are gone now. Marvel just needs to focus on these new characters now and just let it go with the original members. I know its sad and everything but its really time for them to move on.

reply

It has moved so far away from Endgame now to the point of irrelevance. I'll watch it.

reply

I mean I can't really blame them for this scenario due to the many films delayed due to this pandemic so they had no choice but yeah its still a little irrelevant since its being released after Endgame regardless on how far away its released from that film.

reply

I am looking forward to this.

After Endgame it makes sense to have a movie more grounded.
Also Florence Pugh is the best, if it wasn't for the Covid she would be an A-star by now.

reply

Florence Pugh is the future, agreed that COVID derailed her rise

reply

Aside from Scarlett, Florence is definitely a major reason to look forward to in this film. She's a fantastic actress & she'll probably have a predominant role in the future of the MCU. That's honestly the only reason why I think it's somewhat appropriate for the film to be released after Endgame, however it wouldve still make more sense if the film was released way before. At least before Infinity War. Releasing this now feels like more of a financial income stunt from Marvel by knowing how popular the character of Black Widow is just so they can make more money. I just feel like they need to move on and let go of these old characters and focus on the new ones.

I also kinda dig the grounded approach to this but the whole skydiving sequence in the snowy location filled with all CGI shots going back to that typically superhero movie trope just threw me off. I wish it wouldve looked more like a big budget spy film like the modern Bond films or Mission Impossible.

reply

I think it's more of a way to properly say goodbye to this character than to just cash some money in.

Let's be honest, all movies they make they want to make money from. But if it was just to make money there would be more profitable and more popular characters to do than Black Widow.

reply

I guess that makes sense. I just think that this film is more about the money mainly because of how popular her character is and that Marvel will fear that they would lose interest in fans if they just completely moved on and abandoned the first generation of MCU characters. I understand the love for the character and their intention to give her her own movie but come on, they killed her off in Endgame and now all of a sudden her own film was planned to be released a year after that film. It just takes away that closure and that emotional send off they gave to her in Endgame. That was the point of that film. Like I said, the studio and the fans just have to move on. We are all going to miss these characters and it sucks that we won't see most of them anymore after Endgame but they need to start focusing more on the next generation of MCU characters. I know Florence will most likely be predominant in the future but she couldve been established a little before now with this film coming out a lot earlier. Just like they did with Black Panther and Spider-Man.

I also think Black Widow is popular enough for Marvel to realize they can make good money off her own film due to the many praise Scarlett receives for her portrayal. Under normal circumstances, I think this film would've made around 1.1 Billion worldwide.

reply

Agreed. Just a money grab. Her character is dead now. I dont expect this movie to do that well unless there is an end credit scene that shows present day and that she is still.alive.

reply

I do think it is a bit of a cash grab, however I still think the film would've done pretty great under normal circumstances due to the fact that its another MCU flick in which that alone will just already sell to audience and of course because of the popularity of the character of Black Widow. I just feel like the anticipation for this film is a little too high than it should be. I get why people would be excited for it but I seriously think other films coming out like No Time to Die and Dune should receive way more anticipation.

reply

From all indications, this movie is setting up the Thunderbolts so it does have modern relevance.

reply

As long as they continue to make high quality movies, I'll continue to look forward to a new installment in the MCU. At this point, they've made 23 films, and every single one has been entertaining, thought-provoking, and clever. Nearly all have been excellent films, and at this point they transcend the genre. They aren't superhero films, they're simply great films that happen to fall into the superhero category. For someone like me, who isn't a fan of superhero films overall, and who doesn't typically watch many of them, the films of the MCU are can't-miss, must-see-on-opening-night fare.

If I were to assign the 23 existing films letter grades, all but five would be in the A range, six earn an A+, and the remaining five earn a B+. Every single one has been both a critical success as well as a box office success. Nine of them have earned over $1 billion. Only 38 other films have done that. In other words 20% of all $1 billion plus films ever made are from the MCU.

So yes, I am definitely looking forward to this film, as I imagine millions of other film-goers are.

reply

I understand. I will definitely see this film opening night no matter what due to how much I love the MCU and the character of Black Widow but this film is honestly one of the least MCU flicks I'm excited for. The original cast of the Avengers will always hold a special place in my heart but its honestly time for the studio and fans to let some things go and move on with future characters. This film should've been released way back and it doesn't make too much sense for this film to be released now.

I also wouldn't say nearly all of these films to be excellent. The MCU has had a slew of weaker films like Captain Marvel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Iron Man 2, Thor 2, and even Avengers 2 was pretty disappointing. I still think this film has a pretty good chance of being up there with the stronger MCU flicks because of the many great movies they had. To be honest though, I'm not even completely sold on the trailers for this film either. I dig the grounded spy-thriller concept but towards the end with all these CGI shots and the skydiving harkening back to typical comic book film formula just seriously took me out.

Like I said before, I understand all the anticipation surrounding this film and I am happy others are excited for it but its time for the fans and the studio to move on now.

reply

Captain Marvel is among my favorite MCU films, as is Iron Man 2. I know the latter is not a popular opinion, but Captain Marvel seems to be a fan and critical favorite in general. My least favorites of the lot were Thor 2 and Iron Man 3. And Man and the Wasp is not among my favorites, but I definitely enjoyed it.

For me, Guardians of the Galaxy was the tipping point. When that was announced I rolled my eyes and assumed it would be the beginning of the end for the MCU. No one was going to go see it, and the run would end. I read comics when I was younger, and even I barely knew that the GotG existed, and a film with a tree and a talking raccoon among the leads seemed doomed. Little did I know...

reply

Yeah I understand. Captain Marvel was not one of my favorites and I thought it could've been much better but I can see why some may give it a lot of praise and that is totally fine. I wouldn't really say it's a fan favorite in general though. The overall consensus seems to be positive for the most part, but not many consider it to be a masterpiece like top tier MCU flicks such as the first Avengers film or any of the Russo directed films..

The Guardians scenario you brought up is actually a pretty good example I have to admit. I too wasn't that big on the idea of a Guardians film and the trailers didn't necessarily sell me on the film. But I was still interested because it was part of the MCU assuming it would be connected to future films leading up to Infinity War and Endgame and the film itself actually turned out to be great. So that could possibly be the same scenario for Black Widow as well.

Really the only gripes I have with this film is that I still think it's unnecessary to be released after Infinity War and Endgame even though it takes place a little before the events of those films. I get that it may possibly set up Florence Pugh's character for future installments but it still could've done that like how Civil War did for Black Panther and Spider-Man. And again in regards to the film itself, it seems to me like it'll start off all grounded having a Bourne/modern Bond film vibe but then it'll fall into that typical 3rd act comic book film trope with crazy destruction and CGI shots here and there. I understand the final act for these movies have to be the most major set piece but like I said, it should be more in the lines of what Mission Impossible or Bond did for their films. Therefore, I don't think the hype is all that necessary for this film but I still will see this film no matter what and can still respect people who are very excited for it.

reply

Marvel movies are thought provoking? lmao. All they've done is replace the 80's action genre. Entertaining, sure, but highly forgettable.

reply

They are across the board well-written, with intelligent dialogue, heartfelt emotional beats, and a possessing of a superb wit. That doesn't mean they are for everyone, and you clearly don't enjoy them, but if you can't acknowledge, or even notice, the consistent depth and intelligence, you're either purposely ignoring it or simply not bright enough to get it.

In a similar vein, not everyone appreciates the humor of Monty Python, but anyone who tries to say that Monty Python's humor is for dumb people is either dumb himself, or in denial.

reply

Stop assuming you know anything about me. I do enjoy most marvel movies but lets be real, they're turn your brain off dumb action movies. Thought provoking is the last thing I'd describe them as.

reply

I didn't assume anything. Re-read my post. Though now I'm definitely assuming you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed based on your misread of my remark, and your inability to see the Marvel movies as more than "turn your brain off dumb action movies."

reply

"you clearly don't enjoy them"

"I didn't assume anything."

lmao caught in 4k.
