Was anyone else petrified...

with Hugo so close to and even handling the baby?

I was thinking, woman, are you crazy?

Hugo's going to slap him, poke his eyes, bite his nose, or even drop him on the floor to test whether he'd break.

reply

No because it's a fact that he never violently attacked anybody on the show. He kicked a roiding out adult in the leg for grabbing him.

reply

Uh, he swung a wooden baseball bat at the other children. Fortunately, he didn't hit any of them, but if it had slipped out of his hands, it could have ended badly. Maybe he didn't deserve to get slapped the way he did, but he was a little monster whose parents were phoning it in.

reply

He swung a bat around wildly, not at them, which is why none of them were hit by it.

reply

I think his ability to actually sit still and follow direction shows that his parents have worked with him and are trying to turn his attitude around.

Yeah it looks like they're actually trying to be parents now. The visit from child services probably helped a lot.

reply

They should still cut his hair so he actually looks like a little boy.

reply

Hahaha lol, that was the only thing that have bugged me all the time.Seriously, long hair doesn't look good on that child. He would be a prettier boy with short hair.

This.

reply

No, never gave it a thought.
Why, was there some reason for concern?
Had the child ever seemed anything but lovable?
Odd way to end the episode.
What was it you were sensitive to that you figured most everyone else missed?

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

reply

Yes I thought Hugo was going to hurt the baby. He was so out of control at the start of the series .

reply

He was actually very gentle with the baby. I agree that the visit(s?) from Child Protective Services made Rosie & Gary get some help with their parenting skills. Hugo seems to have improved 100%. Maybe it was a good thing that Harry slapped him, if that was the catalyst that led to this.

Boo Hoo! Let me wipe away the tears with my PLASTIC hand!--Lindsey McDonald (Angel)

reply

Same here...and agree with the OP. He was completely....in every way.....out of control throughout the entire mini-series, with the exception of the final scene. I would never have allowed a spoiled brat that I had witnessed swinging a bat at the heads of other children the way he did come anywhere near my baby. No way.

 The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news. 

reply

Show should've ended with the sound of a slap, without showing it!

reply

That would've been cool.

reply

In fact I was waiting for him to give a slap in the baby's face, like reproducing an adult mistake.

But it was great anyway... that kid is human after all.

reply

No, because I could see Anouk's hands the whole time Hugo held him.

reply

The book and Australian version are soo much different than the American NBC version. According to this version, Hugo just needed a bit of proper discipline. However, according to the other versions Hugo (and his parents) is out of control, and is needing of tons of back-logged discipline (maybe even counseling at that point). He was an absolute terror; biting his peers, melting into tantrums at he slightest disagreement, kicking and spitting on an old man (unprovoked). So according to this, "The Slap," it's true, Hugo just needed consistent guidance.

reply

Which adaptation did you prefer? I've not seen the Australian version [yet?]

reply

I preferred the character development of the first adaption. I also feel that the first adaption created more tension between the divide (Hugo/Rosie vs Harry), but the American version added/omitted many elements not included in the book or Aussie versions.

I honestly think that people should read and watch the Aussie version themselves; I'd hate to bias anyone too much ; )

reply

I saw the Swedish 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' films before the American one came out. I didn't enjoy the American one as much.

I watched 'Broadchurch' on BBC so I didn't watch American 'Gracepoint.'

I really liked the Australian series, 'Secrets & Lies' and am not watching the American version.

I don't understand why their bringing Idris Elba over to redo 'Luther' when the British version already played here.

I'm glad I haven't seen other versions of 'Poldark' because this is currently my most favorite tv show.

But folks are writing 'The Slap' AU is so much different than this one, I might check it out on Hulu.

reply

You know, I beginning to wonder if we believe certain versions of things are better than others simply because we watched or read them first, rather than it actually being better than the other versions. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to test this theory.

reply

I watched the Australian version via Hulu last week and kept wishing someone would slap the teenage girl, the gay boy and the veterinarian. I wanted anyone to strangle Rosie. lol

The US adaptation made each of the characters a little more likable.
