Hated it.

Ok, hate is strong, but I strongly disliked this, and I'm sucker for anything that can homage the 80s action film.

For starters it doesn't play like a real homage/satire, it feels like it was written by a hyped up 14 year old after watching a half hour youtube video of 80s movies, and that's their entire idea of what happened in the 80s, rather than someone who actually immersed themselves in the films and culture of the time. It is tacky and plastic, and seriously lacks any proper feeling of heart. The entire thing is a pisstake but without the relevant referential humour.

Where it completely lost it for me was though, where it was trying to be a so bad it is good type experience. Not film ever intentionally made to be "so bad it's good" has ever worked out. If you aren't going in with genuine intentions, as wacky as they are, that you believe in the quality and merit of what you're making, then it only comes off as bad, soulless, and just a bit try hard.

Lastly, the visuals. I'm not gonna sit hear and talk smack about an independent crowd funded film not having Hollywood effects, but these were pretty bad. The complete overload of CGI in everything made it feel more like an extended PS2 cutscene than a film. It wouldn't have hurt to either scale down a few scenes or create some practical effects and lessen the reliance on computer generated action.

Before immediately disagreeing with everything I have written, please take the time to see these other articles that better articulate how I feel about Kung Fury, they review it in the terms and style I wish I could have thought of myself.

I did however, as I believe in fairness, love Hackerman, love the theme song, and some of the visual gags, but overall it fell flat.

Check out Danger 5 season 2 for an 80s style show that executes in all the areas that Kung Fury failed to, or in video game form, Far Cry Blood Dragon.

It was awesome for low budget film. The 80's were awesome! It did its job

I thought this movie was junk but gave it a 5/10 for effort. There was just too much crap going on at the same time. Had they actually dialed things back a couple of notches, it would've been a much better film.

Also, that horrible filter they placed on the film to make it look like an old VHS tape was obnoxious; it made it look over processed.

It was ridiculously over processed.

While I did highly enjoy the film, I do agree with some of the things you said.
Im also really happy that you gave reasons for why you didn't like it. You don't really see that very often on here.

Just trying to explain my position, I really did have high hopes for this but it fell at nearly every hurdle. Hopefully it can help to improve future productions in this style.
