Gerwig isn't gorgeous

The story seems hinge on the fact that she's obviously and irresistibly attractive. I'm commenting only because her beauty seems to be key to the story. The young Jennifer garner in Alias was gorgeous. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow is gorgeous. Gerwig is nice looking. That's fine. I'd probably go out with her, but she isn't some sort of irresistible homewrecking beauty.

Remember when Guy said he loved math because it's beautiful? Maybe these men fall for her because she's beautiful in the way that math is beautiful...not merely physically/superficially.

reply

You misunderstand why math-heads love math. They love it because it's physically beautiful to them. It has harmony, symmetry, balance, and elegance. To a math-head, math is like ballet. It's graceful and agile. It's a physical form of divine writing.

But, anyhow, that's not why the men claimed to love her. Guy said she was very beautiful and I believe that Hawke's character said something similar. Guy actually remarked upon her physical beauty.

Furthermore, I didn't feel that Maggie had much personality. She wasn't Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Sissy Spacek.

I did think she was gorgeous, but then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'll be good I swear... I'll never see a movie ever again.

your out of your damn mind. She IS NOT.

Contrary to your findings, I find Gerwig to be irresistibly attractive. There's just something about her. And that's the way it often is with beauty. There's the classic, standard, prototypical beauty, and then there's the indefinable beauty that one sees in another that maybe others don't or can't see. It seemed completely plausible to me that Hawke's character found her as beautiful as I do.

I personally think Greta Gerwig is smart, sweet, and charming, which she brings to every character she plays. In this film, one of the reasons Maggie is so attractive to John (Hawke) is because she really likes his writing and is encouraging of his work, in stark contrast to his wife who he feels is neglecting him.

And all the pieces matter (The Wire)

Agree that she is not gorgeous, but she has a certain earthy, sexual appeal.

There's a hell of a lot more to beauty than a model-like face and body. Grownups know that.

reply

In the whole movie only one guy really fell for her and that was because she loved his book.
