Setting

I just started watching the first episode, and I'm confused. These characters are meant to be Russian but they're speaking Turkish. Russia and Turkey were definitely not friendly during WWI (or really at any other time), so I'm assuming this is a Turkish production of a show set in Russia?

Also, the set and costumes are cool but the acting is pretty over the top. The main character shouts a lot in an attempt to convey intensity. Does it get better?

Also do we get to see all these aristocrats get expropriated? Because that's the best part.

I'm relieved I'm not the only one confused. I know this series is based on a true story. Maybe a bit of research will clear things up, but then I might read spoilers.

I've heard good things about it, but I don't know yet. I'll give it a few more episodes. Now if Burak Ozcivit were in it, I'd be signing up for the long haul and back again no matter what. He is Turkish drama to me.

I'm sticking with the series. The curiosity over what happens to the characters, the amazing music, and the gorgeous winter filming locations in Russia are keeping me watching.

About those winter scenes, I've never seen winter shot so beautifully. I swear I feel cold watching it. The battle scene in the snow-covered forest is amazing and appears so realistic. The actors' faces are literally frosted over.

Speaking of actors, Kivanc Tatlitug's eyes are so gorgeous! In those winter scenes it's almost like they are the only things that have color on the screen. That's a perk for the show as well. He's a beautiful man to watch in this series.

One thing I've noticed is how brightly lit the interior scenes are. The interior shots set at night are so brightly lit it almost is jarring. I contrast that with how dark Poldark interior scenes appear to be. Maybe it's just an effect I'm more accustomed to. It doesn't mean the bright is bad, just different.

So, to sum up, I think I'd always wonder what I would be missing if I didn't finish it, and if Netflix ever takes it away (which it probably will), I would be mad at myself for not watching it.

I'm still watching and it's still engaging me, but I'm suffering from TSDHBÖII Syndrome. That stands for This Show Doesn't Have Burak Özçivit In It.
