How do you interpret the last scene?

I am referring to the scene at the undertaker's office, when the father suddenly gets up and walks away. He doesn't return to console his sobbing wife.

Is the father starting to get disgusted by his wife's cold attitude to their daughter's death?

I think he comes to realize what she has done - and what he contributed to. He sat silently at the table (in an earlier scene) while his wife crucified his daughter for doing nothing more than wanting some sort of joy out of this life on earth. He sat silently while his wife tried to portray Maria as a saint and miracle worker at the funeral home after her death. When she turns and asks for his support, I think that's when it hits him; what he has done by remaining silent during her religious tyranny all those years. And then it hits her as well...and she start sobbing uncontrollably.

Spot on.

God, the mother disgusts me throughout the film, but when she broke down I couldn't help but feel pity, a bit.
