Which chapter did it for you?

For me the family dinner stood out for its heart-wrenching confrontation of a repentant Maria and her rigid mother.

Second was the scene in the confession booth. It's soul crushing to see how the natural arising feelings of an adolescent girl are being stifled by religious doctrines.

The confession. Her stark, pure profile as she spoke to the priest. Her innocence and sweetness were heartbreaking to me.
