First thoughts

Just seen for the first time. It's quite surreal and interesting. Of course there are lots of unanswered questions, but that's bread-and-butter for surrealism. I would definitely watch it again.

Certainly worth watching... I didn't find that many unanswered questions per se, but it does give us a lot to think about...

reply

What kind of unanswered questions?

reply

Seriously? Been a while since I watched it, but seemed to me there were many. When was it set, for starters? Were they actually turning people into animals, and if so, how? I'd really have to watch it again to give you a complete list, but I think there'd be a long list.

I think those are not very relevant questions. We are just to assume we were in a point where this society has evolved - it has evolved scientifically to be able to do those things, and also as a civilization it has evolved to a point of being mandatory of contributing as a couple to this society.

reply

Relevant to what?

reply

To the movie.

Why did the woman ser up the hotel worker to be stabbed by the shortsighted woman after she'd blind her?

I just saw this film too. It's pretty funny, I would recommend it to people that like edgy/quirky films, and fans of dark comedy would like it too. It's kind of like a romantic comedy version of Hunger Games, it's really awkward. lol....

My biggest complaint though is probably the dialogue. It's just really simplistic. Perhaps this was the intention of the writer and director etc. But I thought more in-depth dialogue would have made the movie a little easier to understand.

The ending was kinda lackluster as well. But other than this, it's a film that will make you think then laugh, then think again and laugh again... and on and on. I give it a 7 out of 10.

I wouldn't think a romcom fan would enjoy this movie much, at least not on the basis of enjoying that genre. While this movie does have elements of both romance and (dark) comedy, they seem more like surface elements than defining ones. This film seems more philosophical, at least to me. (Perhaps that seems pretentious, I don't know.)

I don't think the film aspires to be easily understood. And while that would probably be a valid complaint of a romcom film (given the rules of that genre), it seems to me this film benefits from its shifting meanings... again, probably sounding pretentious.

I'm sure this movie isn't for everybody. But for those who find your typical romcom or scifi flicks boring and flat affairs of one-liners and CGI hijinks, this is a gem to get thoughts flowing. At least in my opinion.

It's a fair assessment, ducksoup. Romcom fans might get turned off by this because it doesn't fit the genre to a 'T'.

It's more of an art-house take on the romcom genre. And while it almost doesn't even fit into this category, it still does in it's own unique way. The movie seems to simply give viewers subtle "clues" as to what's going on rather than the whole story being laid out in plain english for all to see.

I think it's being critical of marriage to some degree. We seem to put too much emphasis into relationships and/or marriage when in reality, we're not much different than the mammals we see in the wild. Which is probably why so many marriages end in divorce and why men are more likely to sleep around than women are. That's not to say that women never do it because they do, but it goes back to our primal roots, where men (like mammals) just want to "mate" with as many females as possible. Then we look at this film and this is probably why they turn people into animals, it's because in essence, that's what we are. But the movie teaches us that we can avoid this by being in a relationship which doesn't really solve anything. lol

It's a funny film but yeah, The Lobster would probably be a little off-putting to your typical romcom enthusiast, But right after I watched it, I was trying to think of movies that are similar to this one and the first thing that came to mind is Hunger Games. LOL! Wow, is that some kind of indication just how odd this films is or what?? :)

What movies would you say are similar to this?

reply

I don't know it they are similar really, but it does remind me in some ways of I Heart Huckabees. I guess I could accept them both as Arthaus Romcomz, but only with a 'z' at the end, to put the usual romcom enthusiast to sleep? Both in some way remind me of the writings of Borges.
