Why did david try to partner with the heartless woman?

Was it only to escape from the animal transformation. Had it been the reason why didn't he just chose any other woman?

The point of these scenes is more to capture how much you are willing sacrifice out of desperation when you are reeling after a break up. Obviously this is an extreme circumstance as he only had six days left to live as a human. But at this point he was close enough to the pain that he felt being in a relationship devoid of emotion would be a simpler fit than trying to put himself back down the road of something that would hurt him again.

Nice answer!

Yes Casey! In real life, there are people who choose unlikely partners after a devastating break-up/loss. Though at some point, like he did, realize how bad of a choice they made!

Self preservation. A part of David's character was that he was a hopeless romantic in a world that treated love as a commodity. Everyone seemed to be coupling based on arbitrary traits they share, rather than real emotion. Note the way he behaves at the hotel. He approaches women naturally and compliments them, and completely ignores the desperate woman who throws herself at him. David doesn't just want a partner, he wants a lover.

Once his friend stole the girl with the bloody nose and the blonde girl spurned his advances, David had to scramble to find an agreeable partner. It was always easier for him to pretend he didn't have feelings than it was for him to pretend he did, as evidenced by how unfazed he seemed when his wife left him.

i disagree that his character is a hopeless romantic, the reaason he was interested in rachel weisz character is because they were both short sighted. after she is blinded and he cant find another shared arbitrary trait he leaves her until he comes up with the idea or making himself blind so that they can have a shared trait again.

in the hotel he wanted someone attractive so after the 2 young girls were off he chose he heartless woman. the water splashes over the end credits lead me to believe he did not blind himself at the end and instead became a lobster.

the moral of the story was either real love doesnt exist or it takes more than one shares characteristic to build a relationship on. i prefer the latter

reply

He would have been better off with the lady who jumped out the window. The one who kept talking about how she was game for anything sexually, she was obviously desperate to get coupled too. He might not have liked her that much but at least she wouldn't have killed his brother, and she swallows.

reply

I have no idea, other than maybe desperation and stupidity. Like most of this movie it made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

He said that it was easier to fake not having feelings that you have than to fake feelings you don't have.
To pair up they had to have a "true match commonality" and not a faked one.
So, he was able to fake not having feelings about her choking to death and that convinced he was being honest about his callousness. (which he wasn't)

That whole situation was a commentary on how desperation to avoid ending up alone (or in this case, turning into a lobster), will cause your brain to convince you to settle for whomever for whatever implausible reason.

reply

it's a commentary about how people often found it easier to suppress their needs and wants in order to be with their ideal person no matter how toxic the relationship is and yet completely incapable of being in an less ideal but elthier relationship.

reply

He finds her more physically attractive than the biscuit woman, and he is desperate. He decides to try the nosebleed ploy but with heartlessness as the shared "distinguishing characteristic".

He says (he is quoted as saying by the narrator) that it is easier not to show what you really feel than to pretend to feel what you don't feel. So pretending not to feel anything when someone is in death agonies, choking, etc. is theoretically easier than pretending to love someone.

The heartless woman can always count on getting another day at the hotel by shooting a loner, so outing him as "incompatible" costs her nothing.

He also said that he liked women with short hair, and she seemed to be the only one with short hair.

What do you mean you don't understand why they would fake their way into a relationship? You do realize that the alternative for David was being turned into a lobster, right? David thought it was easier to be with someone who didn't expect him to care then to pretend to be in love.

reply

And again because the characters in this film were so dumb, it didn't occur to him that people with long hair can cut their hair.

But isn't that how it goes when people push themselves into relationships.

Short hair (by choice) on a woman says something about her personality/character. There are many women who would never cut their long hair and who would consider it a horror to have short hair. Such as the princess-y girl in the movie who said her defining characteristic was her beautiful hair.

I asked this same question in another thread and got linked to this one.

Some very interesting observations about why he chose the heartless woman.

I do think though that they should not of made the biscuit woman make advances to him cos surely she would of been the better option then to fake not having any emotiond at all with HW rather then just be with her?

BW was sexually active which he said was a redeeming feature of a lobster that where still sexually active after 100 years so he obviously thought about sex and reproducing and i cant see that happening with HW whereas BW was offering it to him on a plate and was quite attractive but still he didnt chose her cos was easier to fake no feeling with HW and liked short hair just seems to much of problem for me but if was no BW character then u can say his choices was severely limited.

reply

Well over and over again through this film, nearly all of the characters do the stupidest option out of every option. And it was even in the case of simple decisions, like BW verses HW. And also, based on the provocative things she said, I think she would of cut her hair easily. But he didn't even think about it. So based on how stupid they all were, I think that it meant that people who live in a kind of totalitarian system with few choices, really can't even think out of the box anyway.

Very well said, and a very good point.

Be who you are. Everyone else is already taken.

reply

I suppose you are right but it's life or being turned into an animal and all of these people are still so stubborn.

reply

He doesn't care all that much about short hair. He tries for Nosebleed's friend with nice hair first, and he doesn't mind Shortsighted's hair in the end. I think we have to take the feelings as the real reason.
