German is not a particularly tough language to learn

Just saying.

(And how much can ya trust the opinion of a guy who wants to be a lobster, anyhoo?)

Why? I came into this game for the action, the excitement... Listen, kid, we're all in it together.

I beg to differ, mail-2217. I took two years of German in college, and it is an extremely difficult language to learn IMHO.

As Mark Twain once said, "I'd rather decline two drinks than a German adjective."
The great author knew whereof he spoke.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

Yeah it's not like this movie was a comedy and that the statement was meant to be comic.

reply

This may have been intended as a (dark) comedy, kevin. But shooting people and animals, blinding people, and killing a dog for no apparent reason are NOT my idea of comedy. Call me crazy.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

That's why it's specifically labeled a "dark comedy."

reply

It should have been labeled a dark, nonsensical, fascist and cruel "comedy".

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

it's not a dark comedy, it's satire. huge difference.

also, most of the cruelty did not serve any purpose.

reply

It may be satire, but every ad I've seen about it says dark and comedy. So yes, it's a dark comedy. One even says its laugh out loud hilarious. And while I did Lol a couple times, it wasn't because it was hilarious, it was because it was ridiculous.

This makes no sense whatsoever.

hilarious : extremely amusing : boisterously merry

ridiculous : arousing or deserving ridicule : extremely silly or unreasonable : absurd, preposterous

"It may be satire, but every ad I've seen about it says dark and comedy. So yes, it's a dark comedy."

so if i sell you a cake and write onto the box "made out of pure gold", you would gimme 2k for it? awesome.

"One even says its laugh out loud hilarious."

yeah, especially the second half of the film, right?

"And while I did Lol a couple times, it wasn't because it was hilarious, it was because it was ridiculous. "

i guess "salo" was a laugh riot to you as well.

reply

Not everything has to fit into a neat categorical box. In fact, most things don't.

The Lobster is a satire that uses dark humor. It is a black comedy that is also quite satirical.

Satire and dark comedy are not mutually exclusive.

She killed the dog, his brother, because she suspected he was not in fact heartless. Thus upon proving her suspicion when he cried about it there WAS a reason it happened and if you can't comprehend that fact it was clearly lost on you.

Guess it's relative. I was always told that German was one of the easier languages to learn for an English soeaker because many of the words are similar, but he was referring specifically to the grammar.

reply

It's easy to to pick up the basics of German for English speakers because of the similarities, but the grammar is very difficult.

Point taken. Pedantic. But point taken. :D

For the average English speaking schmo who just wants to 'get around' in a foreign country, German is dead simple to pick up compared with Mandarin or Hebrew or Gaelic or...

reply

Maybe next to those languages, but not many others.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

I believe it is hard. There are so many harsh guttural sounds involved, proper pronunciation would be difficult. It's an ugly language.

reply

I agree Frenchi, but it did come in handy when I was in Deutschland.

You're right! German is not an especially difficult language to learn for native English speakers. At its core, English is a German derivative.

And I think I'd rather take a year to learn German than have my boyfriend poke out his eyes to be with me.

Just saying. 😉

(I wouldn't want to be a lobster either. A parrot, though...not a bad idea.)

reply

Ive studied and managed to learned some degree of 6 languages and I also think german is the hardest of them for the reasons mentioned in the film (grammas is very complicated)
