I'm all for ambiguous endings, but...

The Lobster's ending seemed unnecessary to leave open ended. Of course I'm referring to whether or not he actually blinded himself. It could have ended with him returning to the table and us seeing he didn't do it, but tells he her did anyway that he did. It wouldn't change the impact and would have maybe even added to it.

I don't hate the ending, because it still has me thinking about the possible outcomes. But I guess I'd just rather have seen him come back so it is clear that he does love her and, even though lying about being blind, and didn't abandon her there or go back to be turned into a lobster like some other theories I have read. I really cared about Weisz' character and I wanted to leave knowing she was going to be okay and have support in her life. Not have be left with some doubt!

Still, great film, and either ending works for different reasons. Just my two cents.

True, I kept stareing out the window beside her to see if he had snuck away or something but then I thought maybe we'd hear a scream or he would come back to the table and be bloody or lie about being bloody lol but yeah was kind of let down myself

He is wishy-washy, he has difficulty with true commitment. I took the ending as him NOT blinding himself and just sneaking out, leaving her without saying goodbye.

If you look closely at the traffic in the background, the answers lay within.

It's no coincidence the film ends, the second the 2 opposing lorries connect.

reply

so what are you saying? that he did it or what?

reply

I don't think they actually connected. It looked more like they were passing each other. You can see some overlap just before it cuts.

reply

I should have worded it differently. I didn't mean physically connect.

Cut to black, long wait before the credits begin. What more do you want?

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.

My brother thinks he figured it out. At a point in the movie, she says "to this day he wont tell me what animal he turned her into." So this could either be a previous journal entry she had or her telling the story after all the events. I still love the movie and the ending either way.

"If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't."

The narration ended once the diary was discovered, though. So while it's possible that David sneaked out of the diner and abandoned the woman, it's also possible that he blinded himself or that he returned to the table to discuss the issue further.
