The writers were lazy ....

... if you don't find love then you'll be turned into an animal .... why?

reply

You were expecting logic from this cruel, nonsensical and fascist piece of crap?

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

I was briefly hopeful .... not any more

reply

The film isnt promoting the world it shows. Are you someone who can only handle nice films?Thats fine if you are.

reply

shhh

reply

Like Dracula - animal is pure desire - love is human

reply

Well it's some sort of dystopian alternate universe/future were if you're not able to procreate with a true match then you don't deserve to live. It seems like it is a government enforced law. The turning into an animal part was so the people weren't completely desperate as there was an afterlife for them.

reply

That is exactly the point. It is an absurd man made construct. The writers are conveying that many things we come to take as tradition and 'the way things should be' are the same

reply

It's an intentionally abstract allegory, if you struggle with comprehension you probably shouldnt analyse film.

reply

To function as an allegory it must parallel or reflect something in reality. This story is closer to what we might call a fairytale. I thought it similar in tone to those off the wall stories that used to populate shows like Tales of the Unexpected from the 60s and 70s.

I can't work out what sort of things in our existence this story might be trying to represent. And clearly I am not alone. And no, that doesn't mean I am a simpleton. Sometimes things are hard to find because they aren't there.

The whole thing is absurd. That isn't, by itself, a fault, but it does make attempting to 'figure it out' a fool's errand.

While I'm here, I thought this movie was doing really well for the first half or so: the black comedic elements and the visual strangeness were quite enjoyable. Then it started to take itself seriously, or at least seemed to, and ended up looking like a 70s arthouse or film school project. Unless the intention was to satirize pretentious film makers I can't understand where they were going with it. Like most people I don't have any particular beef with film makers of any description so it's satire that I have no investment in. The alternative, imo, is to conclude that the film makers lost their way.

reply

It has real world connotations. To do with the way society views single adults who can't find partners and their value to the community.

reply

ummmm, just don't watch movies like this anymore please. you know, the ones that make you think.

reply

cruel and fascistic!

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

Why are you still here??

reply

I don't get why you keep saying "cruel and fascist" film. Is "1984" a fascist novel because that's its subject matter? Do you watch Weekend at Bernie's and go "that's so cruel the way they're treating this dead guy, he should have a proper burial and not be allowed to be dressed up and moved around as if he were still alive"? The Lobster doesn't promote cruelty toward animals or people, and it doesn't say that real society should be the way it's depicted in the movie.

reply

Now that you mention it, yes 1984 is fascist, but it was a good movie, unlike this piece of crap.

I didn't watch Weekend at Bernie's, but yeah cruel. And like hell this film doesn't promote cruelty to animals or people. It most certainly does. Are you blind AND deaf?

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

OK, this has to be a put on.

reply

You gotta be kidding? The Movie doesn't promote the behavours or reality any more than say, planet of the apes does. This is not a piece of propaganda, it's merely pressenting an alternate reality be it good or bad. Would you call savning private ryan a snuff flick? Is it hard for you To witness fictional pain and suffering?
I don't really want To Tell you To go Watch something easier on the mind, cause it's usually just pretentious... But maybe you should

reply

This movie is pure hipster crap and I will tell you why. Surprisingly, The Lobster reminded of the movie Troll 2 in the sense that it constantly brought up plot points that were never or vaguely resolved. I actually enjoyed Troll 2 though and I'll explain why later. Here are a few things that The Lobster did not resolve(or in other words, how lazy this film was).

Who is the woman from the 1st scene and what happened to her(other than suggesting that the donkey was somebody she used to know)?
Why does everyone act emotionally autistic?
What purpose does it serve to put people through this odd matchmaking process?
Why does the story focus so much on couples having some kind of similar physical disability as a critical point for being a couple. Sure, normal people like their significant other to have similar traits but the examples in this movie seem so trivial, random and immature that I really can't take it seriously.
How do they assign children to arguing couples? Where do they come from? Do they just have like a warehouse of kids just waiting somehow? Are they brainwashed to just accept a new situation like that? Are they robots?
Why didn't the fat guy just shoot his kidnappers when they gave him the gun? Any sane person would have done that, yet he tried to shoot his wife, the woman he loved??
Why was it against the rules for loners to have romantic contact with each other? Why were they loners in the first place? They escaped the system, they can do whatever they want. Yet they chose to stay in the forest near the place that is actively hunting them. And why didn't they fight back? There was the one part where Rachel Weiz stabbed the guy in the leg but nothing else. Were they passively protesting? I can sort of understand being afraid to go out into the world because they were single, but they were a mix of males and females. Just pretend. Forge marriage licenses or something. Or go to Vegas and get married. Was traditional marriage outlawed and the only place to do the deed was at that castle resort?
Why did the heartless woman give Colin Farrell a lap dance(just a small thing but it was weird)?
If she was heartless, why did she want a more intimate sex position where they could see each other's faces?
What was the animal that nobody wanted to be?
Why did Colin Farrell choose a public bathroom to blind himself?
Why was the maid girl the only one who killed her target(the dentist)? Personal vengeance?

There are probably other things but I'll stop there. There will probably be people who think I'm just over analyzing the movie or that I didn't get it, but the truth is, I just stopped caring early on in the movie. I almost turned it off several times. The reason I liked Troll 2 is because it was unintentionally bad and confusing. But most likely the filmmakers of The Lobster intentionally wrote it this way, which is why it is pure hipster crap.
An example of a movie that pulls this style off well, is Luc Besson's Le Dernier Combat(The Last Battle). It is a post apocalyptic story where for some reason the remaining humans can't physically speak and when it rains, it rains fish. The strange story is never resolved but it kept me on the edge of my seat and the characters were great.

Like the other characters, I think she is an archetype, in this case of someone who cannot let go of the thirst for revenge on someone they think has wronged them, even after the object of their homicidal rage has been utterly beaten down by the world (turned into an ass).

Why does everyone act emotionally autistic?

To highlight the satirical point that most of our behaviour is following a script, written for us or by us to conform to social/psychological rules.

What purpose does it serve to put people through this odd matchmaking process?

A satirical one.

Why does the story focus so much on couples having some kind of similar physical disability as a critical point for being a couple

I think that is secondary to the satire of the matchmaking trope that people who are meant to be together share some key common element in their life, which often happens to be some psychological damage/failing, here satirised in the form of physical disability. Women just love a "wounded" man, one who shares their inner pain . . .

How do they assign children to arguing couples? Where do they come from? Do they just have like a warehouse of kids just waiting somehow? Are they brainwashed to just accept a new situation like that? Are they robots?

I don't think it matters -- the satirical purpose here, IMHO, is that children really test a marriage, especially one built on the "rules" of relationships. Generally I think looking for logic in an absurdist comedy is kind of the very definition of not getting the joke . . .

Why didn't the fat guy just shoot his kidnappers when they gave him the gun? Any sane person would have done that, yet he tried to shoot his wife, the woman he loved??

Because his profession of love was self-delusion -- he just wanted, in his heart of hearts, to off the bitch. And see under "absurdist comedy" above . . .

The satirical purpose here, I think, is to picture a world of rebellion that is even more rules-bound than the oppressive society being rebelled against. Think of how horribly oppressive all the societies have been that have been "transformed" by a Communist revolution.

Why did the heartless woman give Colin Farrell a lap dance(just a small thing but it was weird)?

I think she was testing the authenticity of his pretence to be just like her, emotionless even when having sex.

If she was heartless, why did she want a more intimate sex position where they could see each other's faces?

Ditto.

What was the animal that nobody wanted to be?

An authentic human being.

Why did Colin Farrell choose a public bathroom to blind himself?

See under "absurdist comedy" above!

Why was the maid girl the only one who killed her target(the dentist)? Personal vengeance?

Because that was her archetype, the "murderer" who kills someone who just annoys them. This is just the kind of homicidal fantasy we all have from time to time, especially about co-workers!

reply

I get what you're saying but what you've told me just confirms this movie is a depressing hipster mess that's trying too hard. I guess if someone identifies with emotionless characters, then they'll like this movie. For me, I'm an emotional person, so watching this, was like watching paint dry. Colin Farrel was awkwardly bad as usual due to his lack of acting skills. Every movie I've seen him in, he always has this look on his face like he'd rather be at home drinking beer and watching sports. Or working a landscaping job.

reply

Yo, you must be smoking meth to compare this film to troll 2......& let me guess, you've never seen dogtooth or ALPS? I'm not even bothering too say anymore other than I guess lazy writing gets you an oscar nom for original screenplay these days...........
