There were many back and forth discussion between the producers and the MPAA ratings board as to whether the film should be PG or R. In the end the producers agreed with the ratings board decision to award an "R" rating when taking into account that the film deals with sensitive issues such as rape and brutality. Though these scenes are depicted with great care and though the picture is based on a historical semi-autobiographical book by Nellie Bly, compiled from a series of her newspaper articles, but this is not a film that young teens should view without the guidance of an adult.

It probably should have been an R rating because it dealt with very hard subjects like abuse and some realistic torture even though it was all true. I think it was presented very carefully and respectfully.
