This was very different than I expected. In a good way.

This is not a fast paced film, so if you want action, this is not the film for you. If you want a deep, emotional journey, this is the film for you.

Spoilers ahead:

Did anyone not get that the japanese man was his wife? The comments and the flower at the end---I suspected this very soon after they met, but had not seen anyone comment to this theory. But after finally watching this film, that was almost certainly who he was.

Brilliant film. I'm shocked it was booed at Cannes.

The fact that the man was his wife was laid down like a sack of hammers on a newly born kitten. HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY. If anybody didn't pick up on this "theory" then they watched the movie deaf and blind. It was the most obvious thing I've seen since somebody pointed out that obese people seem to eat fast food more often than skinny people.

I'm done with examples of how obvious it was. Bottom line is you're not the only film detective to figure that out. Sorry to spoil that revelation.
