Is the screenplay to blame?

Listen, it's a touching movie and the acting is actually very good. That being said, you shouldn't be mouthing the lines before they happen and be yelling at the screen "Please don't go that route....damn, they went that route." The film feels like it's written by a child and the symbolism, the metaphors and simply how it plays out feels more like an 80's TV movie than something fresh and new. I love Van Sant, McConnaughey, Watts and Watanabe and I wanted to love this movie, because it is a nice story, but I'm struggling to think of a more predictable film.
