What kind of pills is Arthur taking ???

Is he taking his wife's Painkillers. Taking just any medication isn't a sure fire or peaceful death. Aspirin can be the most painful because you usually get sick but the after affects kill you. Certain tranquilizers or things like Xanax may put you to sleep unless you swallow the entire bottle at once. The only thing that sounds remotely peaceful is strong Opiate painkillers which will slowly just stop you breathing.
Was just wondering what he may have been trying to off himself with since there was a very macabre plot to the film ?

THERES NO ROOM IN MY CIRCUS TENT FOR YOU !!!!

He only took two, so whatever it was, it didn't work well.

I think Van Sant missed an interesting opportunity with the pills. It could have been suggested that Arthur was hallucinating the whole episode in the forest, leaving the audience in doubt to what was actually going on.

I think they were birth control. Which the parents of some of the haters here should also have taken.

The labels on the bottles indicated clomipramine (a tricyclic antidepressant) and Provigil (a wakefulness-promoting agent sometimes used to treat depression).
