Is everyone on this post insane??

Just watched "Cake" after reading Ms. Aniston's complaints about her Oscar "snub" and cannot see how anyone in their right mind would ever have thought she could be awarded anything for such an incredibly amateurish acting job. I realize that today's film industry is woefully in desperate need of talent but has the standard of excellence fallen so low that people actually believe that the pointless and empty mediocrity of a film like "Cake" is award worthy?

Apparently Jennifer has no concept of what a great film performance by an actress is but I am really surprised to see so many supposed film fans here confusing her ambition with talent right along with her.

We're now in an era of actors being awarded for all the wrong reasons. They are not talented enough to inspire people from the inside so instead they wear scars, or prosthetic noses, or take off or gain 40 pounds to give a performance on the outside and are shamelessly blatant about expecting to be awarded for it! And they DO get awarded for it! But Jennifer Aniston's obvious and clueless, blind ambition in this regard really takes the "Cake."

U wudnt know a good movie if it hit u on ur fake nose

Cake is getting 42% on Rotten Tomatoes so far, people aren't being fooled.

And even several of the "fresh" reviews are slamming the movie.

Aniston has made over 100 million dollars as an actress, and yet the performance she gives in Cake could be easily duplicated or surpassed by literally THOUSANDS of other actresses.

Hype it all you want, Aniston and Cake are disposable... and it would have been a farce to nomimate her for an Oscar.

reply

Aniston was, however, nominated for a SAG Award, which is a nomination voted exclusively by other actors. Who oughta know.

She didn't give the greatest performance ever in Cake, no, but she did a very creditable job in a movie with pedestrian film-school writing and amateurish one-note direction. If not for Jen, the movie would have been unwatchable. So bravo to her for keeping it afloat as much as she did.

Actorz go 2 workshopz all da time. In fact, da best actorz know dat actin is a craft dat u can never master and must keep learnin indef, dis is tru of purdy much everythin and those who say no mas learnin, I'm da master, is only kiddin himself. Godfather is nuttin. I watch deer hunter, godfather 1, 2, 3, shawshank redemp - all mainstream avg filmz. Don't get me wrong they r good but nowhere near masterpiecez like da livez of otherz, da counterfeiterz, Leigh's happy-go-lucky, or Denis' 35 shotz of rum. In fact, I think I prefer my tarantinos, Coen bros, or spike jonzes over da godfather any day.

There was a time when the SAG consisted of movie actors only, now TV actors are members of SAG, and they stay loyal to their fellow TV actors.

Jennifer Aniston seems to be very popular and respected as a person in the acting community in LA. I think that is the only reason she was nominated for a SAG award. It is a very different role for her. That's about all I can say.

Audience on Rotten gave Transformers 86%, therefore your argument is completely irrelevant.

Ratings on Imdb and RT are meaningless.

Where did she complain about her oscar "snub?" Every article I have read whee she address it, she is definitely not complaining about she, she takes it like a champ and is very professional about it.

reply

If her agents are the ones doing it, then the blame falls on them, not her. How does that make her not professional? And just how do you know it's her agents???? I think its funny how avg joes like you seem to think you're so in the loop and you like to act like you know the inner workings of the Entertainment Industry. Seriously, gimme a fkn break!

Thank you! I think her fans have a lot of loyalty towards her and that's great, good for aniston. Luckily the Oscars got it right. She was decent in the role but she never made me feel anything. I wasn't moved to tears or anywhere near that. It left me cold and I'm a crybaby watching movies! I'm not going to say she will never be nominated for an Oscar, she could do more drama and improve, not impossible. But this wasn't the role.
Ive seen many of her films, not a big fan of her acting but my favorite role of hers was He's Just Not That Into You. It was second time I ever liked her onscreen. Liked her in Along Came Polly, as well. Worst role was Bruce Almighty. I thought she was horrible in that.
Anyways...just my 2 cents

I for one thought that she was awesome in this movie. Do I think her acting should have gotten her the award? Maybe yes, maybe no. To say that she wasn't good in this film at all, is a total lie. There were parts when I really felt sorry for her character and times were I felt her frustration. People tend to slam her for taking the same rom-com films, and now when she tries something different ( whether you think she is good or not is your opinion) she is getting slammed again. She can't win.

I completely agree. Just saw the film the other night, and I thought her performance was amazing. She had me believing she was in dire pain. She's made a few duds but who hasn't. I think there is a bias toward her among her peers. She's not taken seriously as an actress and she should be. She's proven her acting chops for comedy and drama.

I really enjoyed her work in Leprechaun.

reply

Well said and I agree with you; I've seen Jennifer Aniston in 6 or 7 films and this was an Oscar-worthy performance. And I've been a chronic pain sufferer for years.

reply

There is only one thing I can say. That is I live in chronic pain. Daily physical pain that has changed my life. Her portrayal of that was spot on! Whether a fan of hers or not, she nailed the reality of the situation. Every minute of it I was with her because I know how it feels. It is a lonely place to be unfortunately. And like her, my marriage fell apart because of it too. This was very real. The writer had first hand experience, that you can be sure. Moving performance. The oscars are irrelevant.

reply

Her acting wasn't so bad but then again, how hard is it to walk around like you have a stick up your butt. The storyline was just downright dumb, no other words...just dumb. Glad I paid only 4 bucks for this mock of a movie.

You make Jennifer Aniston sound like the worst actress of all time and "Cake" the worst movie ever made. Her performance is this film was surprisingly genuine. I feel she pushed herself to her limits, and that says a lot considering some of the highest paid actors phone in their performances or sleep-walk through their films (Kristen Stewart, anyone?). "Cake" was a passion project for her, and it shows. She deserves kudos for her effort.

Cake and The Good Girl are the best performances of her career. She wouldn't have won against Cotillard but Aniston deserved the Oscar nom over Witherspoon in my honest opinion.

I thought this was a good movie and a good performance by Jennifer Anniston. Better than Still Alice although Julianne Moore is awesome in it.

Jennifer Anniston, obviously, has "image" issues from publicity saturation, but, that's not to say that this she didn't deserve an Oscar nomination.

reply

She was also very good in Derailed. The problem with someone in her position is people don't take her seriously because they are used to her doing rom coms and things like that. She has broken away from those movies from time to time and she shows a lot of range and depth that people don't seem to want to give her credit for. To say that her performance in Cake was bad makes no sense to me only because everyone reacts to situations differently. Who's to say how one would act after suffering a devastating accident like hers and to lose a son on top of it. Adam Sandler (who I can't stand) did a movie called Reign Over Me based on a post 911 trauma and I thought it was the best work he has EVER done but people never talk about it because its not his norm. Stallone in Cop Land same story...people bagged on it because it wasn't balls to the wall blow everything up action we expect from him. Probably his best work ever or at least since the first Rocky. I for one am glad Aniston takes on these roles regardless of the pomp and circumstance that she may or may not get. An actor should take on the work because they believe in it and are passionate about it which is what she was. I look forward to more movies like this from her as well as the traditional movies we are accustomed to. Good work Jen, keep it up.

I thought Jennifer did a very good job in this film. She was believable and showed some passion in handling of the role. Could another actress do a better job? Probably, but I have no complaints concerning her acting.
