Book vs Movie: Thoughts?

The book Isle of the Lost is suppose to be a prequel to the movie, however I feel like the characters are too different. For anyone else that read the book and saw the movie, what do you think?

I listed everything under the spoiler covers because some of it could be considered spoilers.

Some examples:

In the book, Maleficent and the Evil Queen are enemies and the Evil Queen hasn't left her castle in ten years. Yet in the movie, they seem almost like friends.

Mel and Evie are not only NOT friends, Mel spends the book trying to make Evie miserable. They begin to bond towards the end but not as far along as the movie makes them appear.

In the book, Evie hadn't left her castle in ten years. She seemed a little awkward in trying to relate to the other teens. Yet in the opening scene of the movie, she seemed to be extremely comfortable walking over tables and hanging out with the others.

In the book, it seems that Carlos is just being used by Mel and that he's not really friends with them. More like he's scared of Mel and Jay. In the movie, he seems much more confident and one of the group. He still a little scared of things, such as the dog at first, but not as much as the book describes.

These are not the only conflicts I noticed between the book and movie, just the most noticeable.
