You hit the nail on the head. "Descendants" is an intriguing concept; I have been hoping to eventually see all of the princess' children in animation, since it's pretty much a given that all or most of them would end up with at least one, eventually. But the live-action casting for this movie seems so random! I mean, I love Kristen and Kathy, I really do...but huh?!? If anything, I would've expected them to pick Idina Menzel for Maleficent. Kristen is so...adorable and small and has a high-pitched voice. Maleficent is imposing, statuesque, intimidating, with a much deeper vocal tone, and just 'darker' overall. I hope this is one of those cases where the magic of costuming, makeup, and camera tricks can turn the least likely actor into the iconic character.
And then with Kathy--when I think of her, I think of Hocus Pocus. Now, again, it's not that I advocate typecasting and pigeonholing. But, she is kind of a character actor. She just has that distinctive sort of look, and comedy is her forte. No offense to her whatsoever, but I don't know that I can picture her as even an aged Evil Queen. Maybe this is going to be her hag form, in which case they'll have to give her more makeup and costuming than she had in Hocus Pocus.
The other big, obvious question pertains to exactly when and with whom these villains had these children (and all basically named them after themselves.) As someone else pointed out, they all died at the ends of their films, except for Jafar...and as far as we know, genies can't reproduce. Especially not in the form of human kids. It's almost certain he didn't father this son during the other two Aladdin movies; uh, maybe that little cartoon series? If that's even canon, which it's probably not? So I'm going to have to assume that they had these children already, prior to the films' events, and that there were simply no sightings or mentions of them whatsoever. The kids were just...irrelevant, somewhere else, uninvolved in their parents' wicked doings. It's quite weird and confusing, I know. Would've made more sense to do a "princess kids" movie or series--to tie in with the "Palace Pets," perhaps.
At first I wondered why they chose these four particular villains to give kids to, but then I realized it's probably because they strike the balance of being popular, recognizable human characters from some of the most popular Disney films. Animal or part-animal villains, less popular or iconic ones, less-evil ones, or gods who don't have offspring anyway just wouldn't work for a smaller live-action production. Unless they were going all-out and designing "juniors" for every last villain, the only other ones they MIGHT have been able to consider would have been Gaston, Captain Hook, Mother Gothel, Yzma, Facilier, Ratcliffe, Shan Yu, Frollo (lol), or Hans--but Frozen and other recent movies might be a bit too new for this classics-focused little project.
And Lady Tremaine already had two daughters, so, yeah.
