The "real" Mandarin was already hinted in Iron Man 3

but not distinctly.

Forgive me if this subject has probably been already discussed but it still needs to be put out there again because some people misunderstood the whole deal with IM3's Mandarin direction.

Ok first, Hail To The King is a very good short, very intense and great acting by Ben Kingsley and Scoot Mcnairy.

As for the "real" Mandarin being hinted in Iron Man 3:

Killian said to Tony: You simply rule from behind the scenes. Because the second you give evil a face, a Bin Laden, a Gaddafi, a Mandarin, you hand the people a target.

Of course, Killian used "Mandarin/Ten Rings" identity as a distraction to conduct his Extremist work, he & AIM were the villains. The "real" Mandarin and Ten Rings had nothing to do with the events of IM3.

However, the "real" Mandarin and Ten Rings did kidnapped Tony in the first Iron Man film.

So all this bitchin and complaining about "Marvel made Hail To The King to apologize fans" or "it's retcon", you're wrong. You dont need to watch Hail To The King to learn that theres a "real" Mandarin unless you want to learn it the easy way.

Killian is written as "The Mandarin" as far as IM3 but we dont know what Marvel plans to do with the "real" Mandarin, how soon or how later but in the meantime we must consider Killian as The Mandarin.

+1000 times for this.

What if Killian was working for the real Mandarin.

reply

Or Killian was referring more to his own Mandarin, rather than the actual one.

Yes, Killian had Mandarin's characteristics but he wasnt the one behind Tony's kidnapping in the first film.

Killian had Mandarin's characteristics

From what I remember from the comics, Mandarin was a Chinese Übermensch-supremacist that lived by the philosophy of rational individuality and individual anarchism. Yeah, and he also had ten celestial rings with various elemental powers that gave him god-like abilities.

Killian, on the other hand, is a blond Caucasian man with retarded backstory and ability to breathe fire (for some reason), and his motivation is purely materialistic, which heavily departs from what Mandarin was standing for in comics.

So where are those characteristics?

Killian's Mandarin interpretation is based on

Iron Man: Haunted and Iron Man Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

You mean this one?:

Also, "Haunted and Iron Man Director of S.H.I.E.L.D." is the same thing. "Iron Man Director of S.H.I.E.L.D." is the comic book run done by Daniel and Charlie Knauf. Haunted is a story arc from their run.

Mandarin in this story is an old, retired Chinese warlord who have fought Iron Man many times in the past. He still possessed the power of ten rings which he found in the ancient valley of spirits, and he was dedicated to the philosophy of social Darwinism. Killian clearly didn't have any of those traits.

Unfortunately, it's now been confirmed by Shane Black that "All Hail the King" was indeed made in response to the backlash for the twist/treatment of the Mandarin character.

Shane Black also confirmed this:

reply

Well I didn't like Black's take on the Mandarin at all, and I hope instead of him, Jon Favreau returns to direct Iron Man 4 with the real Mandarin.

reply

No one did. What Marvel did was a "test the water" with a double-edged sword sense. They put Mandarin's characteristics on Killian but Killian isnt really The Mandarin, you know what I mean?

reply

I liked Shane Black's direction.

reply

Good for you. But I still want the real Mandarin with his ten cosmic power rings and all to come.

reply

So do I.
