CBS: Before cancelling a good sitcom, you should read this

Before cancelling this sitcom , CBS should understand that part of the audience don't like it just because the main character is gay.

Just saying!

reply

You mean the part of the audience that watches Bill O'Reilly, believes in a fictional God, and hates homosexuals and women? Are you one of them?

reply

No, I'm not. I think you misunderstood me. I'm only disappointed that several good series have low ratings just because they have gay characters.
Just to clarify, I'm gay.

reply

But this isn't a good series. It is nothing but bad stereotypes on parade - an not just for the gay character.

reply

Holy CRAP, just shut up already with your political presumptions.

Some of us believe in (a real) God, and find it completely consistent with that to support gay marriage and women's rights. In fact, not just consistent, but imperative.

People who talk like you do end up sounding as idiotically prejudicial as the far-right nutbags. Congratulations.

reply

I so agree with you. The world has become uber sensitive. No longer can people joke around about anything without having anegative attention brought to it. I, too believe in God and although I am not gay I still laugh at jokes about gays and straight people. Pisses me off when everyone is offended by everything. God made chocolate and vanilla. Therefore, you always have a choice.

reply

Say it, sistah.

Seriously, this new breed of snarky pseudointellectual antireligionist is just as intolerant and insufferable as any anti-intellectual, intolerant religionist.

reply

What a load of crap. Clearly you're following the lying party line!!!

reply

What's the link with the subject? Just curious.

White gays are not overly represented on television. But "non-white" gays are surely under-represented.

Have you considered that the problem is not that you are gay but how YOU behave? I once worked with a person that was loud, stupid, untrustworthy, unkind, and selfish. She tried to sue because no one liked her. In her mind it was racial. However, no one liked her because she wasn't likable.

She would be the only person at a meal unhappy with her order. So she wouldn't have to pay for it. But it took eating have to decide it wasn't what she expected. Whenever something came up missing she had been around the missing item/$. She could be overheard making stupid conversation to other people working. She would kick her allege friends/co-workers when they were down. Ie... True story, " I saw your ex husband with his new wife at the movies this weekend. She is much prettier than you and a NATURAL blond. No wonder he left a mousy little runt like YOU!!"

I could go on and on about why no one wanted to be embarrassed to be seen in public or work along side with this idiot. She was always trying to cut people's esteem so that were as sad as she was. It had nothing to do with her race. It was HER!!

If you are having problems everyplace you go, maybe YOU are the problem! Instead of being a gay man, trying being a good kind man first. I don't know you or anything about you. Nor do I know how it is to live as a gay person. I have gay friends of all races and have never heard any of them speak of your claims but I will. I am the first to admit I may be wrong so please forgive me I am.

Tatmanlulu, my heart goes out to you for whatever experiences you've had in life that have brought you to the conclusion that "gay white men are some of the most racist people on earth". That's a bold assessment. Although I hope (and suspect) that there's not a large percentage of gay white men who are among the most racist people on earth, I don't argue your life experience. My wish for you is that you run into some other types of gay white males along your path which broadens and softens your perceptive.

Yeah, like they killed Will and Grace before it could gain an audience...or Glee...or Queer as Folk, True Blood, Spartacus, Brothers and Sisters, Dawson's Creek, Modern Family and so on and so on...

But I'm sure you'll rant and rave it's pressure from interest groups every time a crappy comedy gets axed if they have any gay characters.

This show is crap, plain and simple.

tatmanlulu : I'm not racist at all. For your information, I also believe that there is not enough black, latino, etc. in the series and that's very unfair. This is not because I did'nt say "black" in my posts that I'm a racist. Everyone is not racist as you seem to believe.

Two and Half men has an interracial gay couple, and Lafayette is one of the most popular characters on True Blood. I'm sure there's more I could think of.

I do know racist white gay males, but most of them don't like anybody. But then again I know several black antique dealers who have said to me "I don't sell to white people" so...that's a pretty racist and stupid business practice in my opinion, too.

There's a new character on The Mindy Project who is a black lesbian. Though she is technically recurring, she's been on almost every episode this year (as many as some of the regulars) and I suspect will be made regular when Adam Pally leaves. Her wife is white.

The main characters on The Fosters are a mixed race lesbian couple.

Shows like Partners or New Normal are crap. I think The McCarthys is not perfect, but it 's funny and entertaining enough to warrant a second season. You should find better examples than Will & Grace , Glee and Modern Family with their sexless gays like monks.

It seems to me that shows like Will & Grace that came along well before there was more of a push for equality were "sexless" because of the climate at the time. Sure, many people knew someone who was gay or had some amorphous idea about it, but it wasn't really as talked about. The first season was 16 years ago. No state allowed same-sex marriage, DADT was 4 or 5 years old. You have to watch the show in the context of the time it was on. All In The Family was a great show for its time, but there's no way a character like Archie Bunker would be on tv now - we get some watered down versions of him.
For its time, Will & Grace was pretty forward thinking (and a damn funny show). And, of course, sex in general is pretty absent from most, not all, sitcoms. Some of the dramas (like Scandal) show men kissing.

reply

If it's canceled it won't be because the main character is gay.

It's because it's on opposite "Scandal".
Whatever show is opposite the LOCK that Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away with Murder have is going to have bad ratings.

BTW, if that were true, that it could be canceled because the main character is gay, then explain how the above 3 shows have millions watching them. Each of those shows have gay characters, AND each of those 3 shows have characters that are in interracial relationships.

reply

This 'comedy' is not funny.

reply

Sure there is that segment in any audience but gay character aside, The McCarthy's fails on it's own merits and deserves to be cancelled.

reply

Pretty bad show here. Won't be missed. Stereotypes abound. Stereotypical overbearing mother. Stereotypical clueless father. Stereotypical gay son. Stereotypical dumb son. Stereotypical bimbo daughter. I'll give Laurie Metcalf some credit. She was funny but it wasn't enough to save the show. I guess she can always go back to playing Sheldon's mother on Big Bang Theory. That's another show in dire need of some assistance.

reply

The theory that the OP stated might be a valid one.

CBS has an older demographic and they are used to a more traditional sitcom. It's possible that The McCarthys wouldn't be something that interests them because there is a gay character that is a main character. There are still a lot of people out there that think like that and many of them are older.

For those that are saying the show doesn't do well in the ratings because it's bad doesn't fly with me. CBS has a stable of bad sitcoms that do great in the ratings.

Well I think it's a much better show than anything else on CBS on Thursday nights, that's for damn sure. I find it very amusing and was disappointed when it wasn't on this week. I do hope it isn't being cancelled.
