How on earth do you keep going...

Who would want Catherine's life? She must be so dog-tired when she falls into bed every night.

To have the kind of job she has where scrote's of every hue are swearing at you and attacking you every day she has an entire family of self-absorbed morons to deal with. In her direct family she is the only one who is prepared to take any responsibility for their actions and yet they all seem to blame her when they screw up. Daniel, her son, is an absolute arse. Throwing away his marriage and family for a quickie....whilst his wife was giving birth, then he expects to just wander home to Mummy, who he hasn't talked to in years. The real clincher for him was whilst he was sitting on the couch moaning about people in the Kitchen "When will they all just go home" talk about zero self-awareness. then Clare, who is a recovering alcoholic who seems to expect Catherine to be by her side at all times or else she will self-destruct and blame Catherine for it...

Then there is Ryan, who I guess is mostly blameless given his background but he is causing her massive problems.

A lesser person just wouldn't even get out of bed to face the world. How she does it is beyond me.

If it were me I would sell up, tell everyone to sod off, put Ryan in care, take my pension and clear off to Spain. Hat's off to Catherine for fighting through this nightmare of everybody else's construction.

The final straw for me would have been where even her seniors were expecting her to have to come up with an alibi for the killings or they would think she was a suspect. I would have chucked in the towel and taken Tanita Tikaram's offer of early full pension....

Many single parents/grandparents are overextended this way. The remarkable thing about Catherine is her demonstrated care toward a number of persons outside her immediate family circle. Not only is she supportive of Daniel, Ryan, and Claire, but she also finds time to give conscientious help/support to Ann and Nevison Gallager (and Helen, in Series 1), to new immigrant Ilinka and more established immigrant Winnie, and to the wretched girls who have to walk the streets to support themselves and their habits. I'm sure I'm leaving others out. There's Neil, for example, who Catherine wants to support in his sobriety even though she doesn't like him very much.

She extends compassion toward Frances and Alison in her visits to them, and both of them have committed serious crimes!

I suspect she's one of the few people left on this earth who actually gives a f*k about anything. They're rare, but they're out there. They cannot rest unless things are right with the world. So as far as Catherine's concerned, she'll have her work cut out for her even after she's long gone.

Great OP. Next series I am hoping that she & Nevison will get together. I can totally see it. Is it too obvious that I see Ann & Daniel together too?
