Painfully unfunny

Last year's Xmas Special was awful. Just when you thought it was safe to go back to BBC 1 on Xmas, an even worse episode turned up.

RIP Ronnie Barker.......

reply

It's a pile of horse manure BBC trying to cash in on people's love of the original series but yet again it's rubbish just like Rock and Chips the prequel to Only Fools & Horses was.

reply

so stop watching and stop commenting.

reply

Isn't this forum all about discussing what people think about specific films/programs?

This, 'if you don't like it, don't watch it' comment you make is idiotic.

I though both the Christmas specials were dire and didn't laugh once watching either. What a great way to sully the memory of a great series.

reply

idiotic no quite simple..

you watched it last year and you hated it, yet you watched it again expecting it to be different and then you post it's awful, not everyone thinks the same thing.

i for the record think you're an idiot with a poor sense of humour.

reply

[deleted]

you watched it last year and you hated it, yet you watched it again expecting it to be different and then you post it's awful, not everyone thinks the same thing
After watching all 26 episodes of the original series about 15 times each, I watched this year's special in the hope it would be better than the previous one, yet ended up extremely disappointed once again. What's so unreasonable about that? From the other opinions in this thread, it appears to me that it is your opinion that's atypical.

i for the record think you're an idiot with a poor sense of humour
It appears that it's your sense of humour and opinion that are suspect. From a cursory look at your history, you appear to have a track record of arguing with, and insulting those with differing views to your own. This speaks volumes about your immaturity, insecurity and narcissistic personality. You really must be as old as your poor grammar and diction suggest!

reply

[deleted]

[deleted]

no, but i like red dwarf which also has a laugh track.

laugh tracks add to the atmosphere of some shows.

i have no problem with people having a different opinion i just don't like the way you're putting your's or those people who i previously have talked with about there's..

i'm mental, deal with it.

reply

[deleted]

There is something sadly lacking (apart from the great Ronnie Barker). They are even sticking in the odd stutter from Granville. I loved the original series, but alas this just seems to be one big flop.

reply

Personally I think your being a bit to critical. I think personallity its not that bad, its just its not as good as the original. As such when comparing it comes across as worse than it actually is. Never the less I enjoyed the first Christmas special, I grant the first episode wasn't the best (though I still laughed at some of the jokes) but I'm willing to see how the series goes.

Hopefully it will pick up, if not then at least we get some closure. And look the bright side, if you don't like it, you can just rewatch the originals.

reply

Mdd +1

originals are always the best.

reply

You don't have to watch...

Yes, this forum is for discussing programs - but suggesting that if you hated the first episode it might be wise to avoid the second one is no more 'idiotic' than pretending you were caught unawares by something you VOLUNTARILY watched...

We know you don't like it; you don't have to exaggerate to make sure no-one misses your point...

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

[deleted]

Absolutely; give it a shot... but, if indeed it is true that it still turns out not to have improved... then suggesting for effect that you are 'not safe' from an episode of bad TV is still OTT!

In other words; if you've been bitten once, it's hardly a surprise if you get bitten again for doing the same thing.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

yep howlin,

so i am right in calling them idiots :P

reply

Weird MSS, how you don't seem to be able argue your corner without (unsuccessfully!!) trying to draw others into your fight!

How many people whose opinions are diametrically opposed to yours here have you called 'idiot', when it's obvious who the real idiot is? Your immaturity is double pumped in your infantile, choleric nature as well as ignorance of the history of this series which blinds you as to how poor the recent two episodes have been.

reply

wow dude just wow...

keep at it idiot you're doing a great job of showing who's immature here..

reply

So is it only good reviews you are to put on here? And there are times when things get better as they go along so you watch them to find out. Get some clowns on here eh.

And for the record, I gave it a chance, watched the first couple, but it's stayed the same drab boring crap throughout.

reply

You know what is really idiotic? People who are so intellectually challenged they can't put their response in the correct place so it's obvious to whom they are answering.

How dare you tell me I shouldn't complain about the second poor reprise to a series I watched entirely on its first run and about 15 times subsequently per episode, when a squirt like you was probably in nappies when it first aired.

but suggesting that if you hated the first episode it might be wise to avoid the second one is no more 'idiotic' than pretending you were caught unawares by something you VOLUNTARILY watched...
The first episode? Don't you realise that there were 26 episodes prior to the 'first' episode you speak of? I didn't like the 2 new episodes and I have a perfectly legitimate right to voice my opinion, even though it might offend a touchy little dick like you who ignorantly thinks there are only 2 of these, HW.

reply

I clicked 'reply' on the relevant post; if you knew anything at all about how the nesting and notifications system on the IMDB boards works, you'd know I don't control where the response shows up... but you saw it, and you were meant to, so job done. I used the system correctly.

How dare you tell me I shouldn't complain about the second poor reprise to a series I watched entirely on its first run and about 15 times subsequently per episode, when a squirt like you was probably in nappies when it first aired.

It's called an opinion; I'm sorry you don't like it, but you'll have to live with it. I didn't say you shouldn't complain. Complain all you want. I said I thought you were being weirdly over dramatic... Kinda like you are being now, in fact. No need to blow a gasket and swear at me... Seems like you're the touchy one. My point may not be the politest, but my language has been.

"Still Open All Hours" is listed as a separate series that first aired in 2013 (with a Christmas special, I believe... ) It's a different show to the original "Open All Hours", albeit sharing some commonalities... So no, there haven't been 20+ prior episodes of this; it's a sequel, not a direct continuation.

It doesn't offend me, you can voice your opinion; I just happened to find it overdone.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

yeah i know right ?

and look how they are getting so worked up over our different view.

reply

but suggesting that if you hated the first episode it might be wise to avoid the second one is no more 'idiotic' than pretending you were caught unawares by something you VOLUNTARILY watched...
How stupid of me to watch a second special in the forlorn hope it would be better than the first, especially considering that I'd watched the 26 originals (which share at least 90% communality, other than RB and laughs) over and over. How utterly overly dramatic of me! In future I'll take your advice and never again watch a second episode of anything if the first is poor, in the hope of not being disappointed, having to come here to state my opinion and thus upsetting those of fragile character with my overly dramatic rhetoric.

weirdly over dramatic
You mean like people who overreact to criticism of something they like?! Chip off the old block there............

reply

If you read my reply to 'blamed_thatcher', you'll see I don't think it's stupid to watch again hoping things will improve... However, if it DOESN'T improve, it's a little bit foolish in my opinion to be melodramatic; you've already had a hint of what to expect... To be fair, this was directed at the original poster more than yourself... I was more responding to you calling somebody 'idiotic' for suggesting that if you didn't like it, you could always switch off.

You didn't upset me. You're exaggerating - which is exactly what I was remarking upon, in the first place.

You mean like people who overreact to criticism of something they like?!

Who says I like it? There you go again, jumping to conclusions... I actually AGREE with you; it's really not very good, or funny - but I got a flavour of that from the first episode, so unlike other people, I'm not edging into hysteria that such a trend is continuing.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

If you read my opening post, what I said was that it was idiotic to suggest that anyone making a disparaging comment about a program in that said program's discussion forum should 'stop watching and stop commenting'.

If people were discouraged from commenting here about programs they disliked (or in this case, programs brought back from the dead that completely failed to live up to the quality of the original), then the IMDB discussion forums would all be very dull and sanitised places.

reply

This is the comment of yours I was responding to:

This, 'if you don't like it, don't watch it' comment you make is idiotic.

What I took from that person's remark to you is 'if the downturn in quality offends you so much [as it seems to] then it might be better to stop watching'... To me, this seems like a fairly reasonable suggestion to make - certainly nothing to warrant the label 'idiotic'...

Unless I have this person on ignore (which is quite possible!) nowhere have I seen it said that you should 'stop commenting', and I myself would certainly never make such a suggestion.

I just thought (and still think) that idiotic was rather harsh, that's all... Then, seeming to confirm this impression, you also gave me both barrels... It seems to be grieving you more than a TV programme (even a bad one!) should, and it was for this reason and this reason only that I thought it might be an idea if you put some distance between you and it.

Of course, you're free to disregard my perspective... I would've thought that was self-evident.

so stop watching and stop commenting.

So basically, that person was telling all those with an opposing opinion to his/her own to shut up. And that IS idiotic considering these forums exist to encourage debate, regardless of whether contrary views cause offence.

reply

Yeah, I have him on ignore... You don't consider the OP's exaggeration to be similarly 'idiotic', though? It's all much of a muchness, to me...

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

Not really. I tried to watch last night's episode with a family member, and we both agreed to switch over after about 15mins because neither of us had laughed once. 'Cringeworthy' was how that relative described it.

Channel hopping, I came across Porridge on Gold. The episode "Happy Release" with Jason as Blanco. It just served to highlight how utterly awful the recent episodes of SOAH have been in comparison to a masterly written and acted comedy.

So, no. I don't think the OP's post is idiotic in the slightest.

reply

I thought last night's episode was the best so far - which illustrates your point in many ways, because it still wasn't very good!

Even a 'well-written' sitcom (which this isn't... ) would suffer in comparison to "Porridge", however.

I'd have to disagree; describing oneself as being 'not safe' from a TV programme seems pretty stupid; it appears you're only happy to tolerate hyperbole if it's in support of a conclusion you agree with... but that's your prerogative, I suppose.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

Careful, HW! I hear a straw man polemically squawking 'not safe, not safe!" in a hyperbolic tone every time you post!

reply

Yeah... let's just say I'm not surprised that you hear voices.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

It appears that metaphors go completely over your head, as well as the concept of giving something a second chance.

Next time you post in an emotive thread, make sure you don't have key participants blocked, otherwise your insistences might once again appear dubious due to your ignorance of the bigger picture.

reply

I know exactly what a metaphor is, I just thought it was excessive, like most of your contributions to this thread...

You know what? If the 'bigger picture' actually mattered, then I'd concede... but it turns out that it wasn't that interesting, anyway... I think you're still getting heated over nothing.

That's your right, however.

Rinec - I appreciate the understanding of my OP. Thank you.

reply

No problem Pzv!

reply

Kindly refrain from referring to my own opinion as "exaggeration". You've clearly expressed your opinion on this thread and I've not been rude about yours. Show the same courtesy for others please.

reply

I'm sorry if I offended you, but I don't see 'exaggeration' as being rude... It's just a descriptive term. We're all prone to exaggeration sometimes, and if someone were to describe how I behave in that way, then I'd have no problem with it.

If you think you weren't exaggerating by using the phrase 'not safe', then perhaps you'd like to describe how you were in danger of being harmed by the TV programme?

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

And it's myself and Pzv who are the overzealous ones here!?! You've taken someone else's words way too literally, and created a straw man you just won't let go of.

Your name epitomises you way more than I think you ever intended; you're just like a yappy dog who wont let go!!!

reply

This is me, letting go. 

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

As a film/tv enthusiast, as evidenced by your presence on IMDB, you should have enough nous to recognise the tagline has been adapted from "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water" - Jaws 2 - perhaps one of the most famous taglines ever used - and adapted into my own Original Post, in an attempt to be more amusing than this God-awful "comedy" has deigned to be.

Looking over your entire comments on this thread, you've done nothing but attack everyone else for NOT embracing a programme where indeed several users have also agreed that it's just not up to standard and is disturbingly sub-par after what has come before.

Now, you like it. Great. Fantastic. We don't. You think it's hysterical. We didn't laugh once. But belittling everyone else - you're out of line.

reply

If you actually look at my comments in the thread, you'll see that *I* didn't think it was up to standard either - this was my comment to Rinec on Sunday January 11th:

Who says I like it? There you go again, jumping to conclusions... I actually AGREE with you; it's really not very good, or funny - but I got a flavour of that from the first episode,

Rinec was also the first person to be insulting, calling me a 'dick' ... If you think I've been belittling, it was probably in response to my being jumped upon for coming into a thread and suggesting people's reactions were a bit extreme.

If you want to point out where I've actually been belittling, then go ahead, and I'll apologise if I need to... Otherwise, I'm going to 'let it go' like I've been told to (again by Rinec) ...

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

And now you're playing the victim, HW! You were a dick for two main reasons:-

1) Chastising one side in an emotive discussion where you had the main protagonist blocked, and therefore could only see the responses to that person's childish rants. I think you'll find that it was that person who was the first to be insulting in this thread.

2) Suggesting that anyone watching a second episode when they found the first poor, was somehow idiotic. And then daring to post a comment expressing their disappointment, in a forum specifically designed for that type of discussion, made them over-dramatic! You then created two lurid and contentious straw men 'caught unawares' and 'not safe from an episode' to parry criticism and reinforce your argument. How manipulative and melodramatic!!

You appear to have a fragile personality that doesn't seem to handle criticism too well, as suggested by your desire to always have the last word. You may counter that I'm responding to your post now, and thus myself having the last word, but twice I've allowed our exchange to drop with you getting the last dig in, only for you to subsequently reignite the thread.

reply

I wasn't responding to you; 'PhantomZoneVillain' reignited the thread after I had backed out of it. I'm not going to let him insinuate that I've belittled and insulted people unless he can show me where I did it (as I did when you called me a dick... ) I have a right to defend myself.

You can call me whatever you like - just don't accuse me of being disrespectful when all I've ever suggested is that you were overreacting... You're the one who's quick to throw around terms like 'idiotic', and 'dick', not me... I'm sure you're very intelligent, you just aren't showing much evidence of it, here (and if you think that's belittling, then just remember that you started slinging mud, first.)

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

No, the person you have/had blocked started slinging mud first and therefore invited a terse response. Your supercilious and patronising attitude has come about as a result of your self-imposed anisotropy. What a smart guy you must be to attack those you assume to be the aggressors when you have no idea of why they have been compelled to act in that way.

reply

I'm talking about between you and me... The person I had blocked had nothing to do with you calling me a dick...

Here's a paraphrase of how our conversation went:

Me: "Idiotic's a bit harsh"
You: "You're a dick!"
Me: "That's a bit harsh too"

... and here's the civil way it should have gone:

Me "Idiotic's a bit harsh"
You: "He said x, y and z about me"
Me: "Ah, fair enough, didn't see that bit... Carry on"

Your first reaction to me being diplomatic was to escalate things even further... Thereby demonstrating that you've lost your temper, and proving my point for me.

To be honest, if you call people a dick then you deserve to be patronised, mate... Not once have I spoken to you that way, even after you fired the first shot.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

And if you had the full gist of the debate, then you'd see I was telling the person that you had blocked that it was idiotic to tell anyone with a negative opinion in a forum to 'stop watching and stop commenting'.

And then in you came with your opinionated views without a sense of perspective or any idea of the context within which my comment was made.

If I'd had lost my temper with you, I'd have called you something a great deal more insulting than a 'dick'. If you can't take that then you really must be a hyper-sensitive person!

reply

I can take it; I just think it's rude (ironic, since that's what PhantomZoneVillain is calling me!) I made an observation, and instead of correcting me like any even-tempered person would, you jumped straight to the insults. If you can't make your point without insulting someone, then you don't have much of a point to begin with.

It's just a message board; I don't understand why you need to get so irate.

... but if you don't think it's rude, then that's fine; carry on starting fights with people.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

You've been antagonistic to everyone who doesn't share your opinion. And apparently, everyone has to think that this show is some kind of masterpiece, because Heaven forbid, people actually call a spade a spade. In this case, it's a dud.

Then, despite your repeated "I will let it drop", you've now passed on the blame to me for "reigniting this thread" - that's right, I did - because, like you, I had to defend MYSELF from your comments about my standing on it.

And you know what, it's a tv show. I didn't think it funny. Get over it. Now, grow up, shut the fk up and move on.

Bye.

reply

I SAID IN MY LAST POST THAT I AGREE, IT'S A DUD ...

!!!

You're just making things up that I've said now, because apparently you don't read what I write...

*sigh*

If you think being told you're overreacting is as bad as being called a 'dick', then I don't know what to say...

You know what? As aggravating as Rinec can sometimes be, at least he's coherent.

Anyway, I plan to move on now; you never have to hear from me again, unless you want to insult me some more and make me stand up for myself... ?

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

HW, not once did you express disdain for this program prior to your switch to passive aggressive behaviour!

I'm sure you're very intelligent, you just aren't showing much evidence of it, here.
As aggravating as Rinec can sometimes be, at least he's coherent.
Make your mind up! To show at least a degree of coherency requires a modicum of intelligence!

And as for the need you feel to defend yourself then maybe you shouldn't be 'caught unawares' when others react in a similar fashion. You're certainly 'not safe from an episode' of the same treatment! How d'ya like the taste of your own medicine, son!? 

reply

Yes I did! So apparently YOU don't even read what I write, either... I even quoted it, and you still both missed it! So, one more time...

On the 11th of January, I said to Rinec:

I actually AGREE with you; it's really not very good, or funny - but I got a flavour of that from the first episode,

I also never said you weren't intelligent; I said you weren't SHOWING much of it - which is a different thing, entirely...

I give up; you're not even interacting with other people, any more; you're making it up, amongst yourselves...

How d'ya like the taste of your own medicine, son!?

It's OK. 

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

Read what I said again! You only expressed disdain AFTER the exchange heated up, when your demeanour turned passive aggressive.

you're making it up, amongst yourselves...
Now, now! Let's not get paranoid here too!

I really think this thread has run its course now; it's become very page 2. You have the last word as usual, HW and I think then it's time for bed.......

reply

I don't care about getting the last word; I care about being misunderstood... I'm not onto a winner since it seems that it's only YOU who can deem my behaviour passive aggressive - I just saw it as correcting an assumption you'd made without ASKING me, first!

Still, night night ... 

If this is really terrible then what is your opinion of the one off remake of Porridge and Keeping Up Appearances.
Notice they didn't make them into a series, ok Keeping Up Appearances was a prequel.

reply

The remake of Porridge has been commissioned as a 6 episode series. It is filming right about now for broadcast later in 2017.

I have not heard anything about the Keeping Up Appearances prequel being turned into a series...yet.

The BBC are planning to do another Landmark Sitcom season in 2017 - and I think that the Up Pompeii reboot may appear as part of that (it was planned for 2016 but didn't go ahead due to casting/availability problems).

At least two of the brand new pilots that were broadcast as part of the Landmark Sitcom season have also been commissioned as 6-part series for 2017.
