I feel that, while more movies with LGBT individuals would be nice, simply making her a lesbian because she's a bit butch is the wrong idea. She's a strong, intelligent young woman who displayed that she didn't need Julius. Displaying the main character as tomboyish to me helps subvert stereotypes, that a bad ass heroine needs to be a Lara Croft type.
To me a braver decision was something like what Paranorman did, which was take a stereotype, the dumb, athletically fit jock and very nonchalantly making a note that he was gay. It made it very normal, like he could have been in a relationship with a woman and it have been just as minor a detail. Even for George Takei's disapproval of the portrayal I think Sulu's portrayal as being gay in the latest Star Trek movie is another brave and fitting choice.
But this? It just feels like it would be forced. The relationship between Julius and April contributed strongly to the ending and made the trust that was built through out the movie more significant. The way April is portrayed seems to me to be a strong demonstrator that a woman doesn't need to be feminine, have long hair, or conform to certain ways to be something special, she can be herself.
