A bit too modern?

Am I the only one who found the camera work and music to be a little too modern for a drama about the first world war? I cannot comment on the quality of the show as I only watched the first 5 minutes. But the way it was shot and the music didn't seem to fit with the tone of the drama. I want to give it another shot...But I don't know. What did people think?

Do you think filming a World War I drama in colour is "too modern"? You certainly should if you want to be consistent with your view. Either you believe, bizarrely, that all drama should use the technology of the time depicted - in this case shot in black and white without sound - or you understand that there is a necessary difference between the form and the content.

reply

No, that's not what I'm saying lol. Why would they need to use olden day technology to make it LOOK older? I'm not saying it needed to be in black and white I just' wasn't keen on the way it was shot. And I thought the music seemed "too modern" It's not that difficult to see my point is it? Even if you don't agree with it...

reply

No WW1 in color is ok.. It's the horrendous music and the way it was shot and produced that I thought wasn't good. It could have been really good but needs to be authentic . Soo many great documentarys floating out there on the topic as well as films.

THERES NO ROOM IN MY CIRCUS TENT FOR YOU !!!!

reply

You don't understand. WW1 is so old that the music of the time was classic rock. Millenials would understand.

It's obviously aimed at the teen generation ,the director's obviously using filming techniques from the past decade...close up/inside/slow motion/ weapon/tank mechanisms, close up body cam style camera work, computer game style graphics, modern music. It didn't take anything away from the era,but added to it in a new and vibrant fashion. The acting was top class from a new young generation of actors, that made these dramas stand out.

reply

I know what you mean but I warmed to this and as someone considerably older than a teenager thoroughly appreciated what the makers were trying to achieve.Much better than the disappointing "Passing Bells" on BBC1 with better acting and scripting.

Have to agree with BeOneOfUs. What your post mentioned did spoil the tone of an otherwise good story and I did a cringe about it right off the bat. As a viewer of many, many war films the annoying "moving cam style" camera work and the totally out of place modern music came across as silly "hip" pandering to a teenaged audience. Regarding the music, how much better this would have been with true period music pieces of that era - and there were many. Certainly there is a place for modern techniques in war films but these particular ones detracted from it.
On the other hand, the acting and war situations were excellent.

I agree. I hated the shaky camera work and music. The cameras mounted on rifles and the actors' bodies made it appear as if they were shooting on GoPros (they probably were), and even the picture quality itself looked like interlaced video, not progressive like film. Putting rock music into a WWI film was odd and distracting. Yes, Tarantino did it in Inglorious Basterds, but he has more vision.

The good thing is it's only 3 episodes of your life that you'll never get back.

reply

I totally agree that the rcck backbeat heard in the first 13 minutes is out of place.

reply

yes. especially the music. i have major complaints about the music. ppl need to watch the "band of brothers" and "the pacific" series'. learn from the masters.

reply

Don't forget to check out "Generation War" if you haven't already!
It isn't as good as BOB but a lot better than The Pacific.

reply

You're a Philistine, Beoneofus. And Generation War is tripe

reply

You're a moron. In what universe is GW tripe?
It is an amazing piece of cinema and you'd be an idiot to disagree.

reply

I think this was made for young people and as for music God knows what was current in 1914.

It's that man again!!
