Not just Peter Gaberial

As has been noted Peter Gaberial is the singer who most inspired the character of Brian Pern but there are others who have some elements in him as well. Last night's episode featured his children clearly modelled on Jack and Kelly Osbourne.

I guess Simon Callow's character is based on Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd; arguably slightly poor taste but still funny.

There was also a reference to Mike Rutherford writing a hit song about his relationship with his father. Also the first manager of Thotch is clearly based on Peter Grant the manager of Led Zepplin who was once a pro-wrestler.

What was the piece of music right at the end when Pern is being driven away by Peter Gabriel?

The theme from The Long Good Friday.

Nice one, cheers.

Big Basil Steel was quite obviously based on Don Arden, who was ELO's first manager (he was also Sharon Osbournes dad). Famously when ELO were starting out in the early 70s he was rumoured to threaten other bands unless they made room for ELO to headline gigs. I have a feeling he was also involved in 'managing' Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull around the same time.

That was a great moment, Simon Day really nailed Bob Hoskins expressions in TLGF, even Peter Gabriel showed the little smile Pierce Brosnan showed in the scene.

I can see why this program is (to me) one of the funniest on TV. I get most of the references. But I can also see why someone might watch it and not have a clue what's going on.

The Big Basil Steel / Jethro Tull scene was chokingly hilarious. The USB / Russian Doll scene was fantastic. Mexican Pepita is a delight. The Sledgehammer parody was brilliant.

But equally I can see why it just isn't funny. This show requires more perspective than just about anything else on TV.

The REAL star is Michael Kitchen. Every scene with him is a delight. So dry he would choke James Bond. His delivery, his lines. All spot on. Just watching the bit in "Death" where he talks about George Michael and the "all in one colour copier". Just WOW!

The show was never going to be a massive crowd pleaser but when you consider that the biggest comedy on UK TV just now is Mrs Grown's Boys does that indicate quality?
