The last scene?

**S P O I L E R**

In the end we see his mother's book that she painted when she was kid, right? So, we see the monster-tree with his stories drew by his mother since then!!! The tree and his mother knew each other since her childhood!! That means that she send the tree to help him??
And other thing that I wanted to mention... they did really good job in make up department because they managed to make her face lifeless!!! Felicity Jones has a brilliant face, very "alive", you see her eyes and you see a person with so much energy-happy-full of life face and they made her look like lifeless as the character demands... welldone, I was impressed how they succed to hide her happy-energy face!

I could be wrong, be the way I interpreted it was that the mother invented the monster in her imagination when she was young to get over the death of her father. (grandpa Liam Neeson)

During the movie we see the mother (years prior to recent time) teaching young Conor how to draw a monster and what it should look like (colour, eyes). She's also constantly reminding him how special the tree at the cementary is.

IMO she was consciously influencing Conor with intention of bringing the monster alive in his imagination as well, so it could help him too whenever he needed him.

I'm not too sure about the stories... perhaps she told Conor those stories when he was little but only now he started to understand them?

You are right, that tree propably was his grandfather, I didn' t notice that!!!

The tree helped her with her father's passing. If you didn't notice, the father was Liam Neeson.
