Why repeat the same story over and over again?

Hollywood is really in a funk right now, no?

reply

they are out of ideas

art is completely out of the window right now, it's been for at least 15 years, it's all business now and films are 300 million dollar investments right now, so nobody is going to adapt something that isn't known.

reply

I'm afraid you're right. I can't think of very many movies or tv shows that blow me away since the Sopranos and OZ, we're talking 15-20 years ago! Oddly, for me the line of demarcation was that Dukes of Hazzard movie around 2005, it was so obviously just made for DVD I realized Hollywood was just churning out anything with a familiar name. Also, AI was such a huge disappointment movies have never been the same ever since. What has been great since 2000? LOTR? and the aforementioned OZ and Sopranos? I did like Rush and Master and Commander but they weren't great.

Banks own Hollywood nowadays, they don't make art they make surefire money makers. Sure, I don't completely blame them they have so much to compete with nowadays it ain't funny. Remember the days when you almost went to the movies every week..and most of the times you saw a good to very good movie? Those days are long, long gone. Finding a good movie is nowadays like finding hens teeth!

reply

I think Lord Of The Rings is absolute garbage.

reply

Oh stop it, there's plenty of good stuff coming out these days.

reply

no there is not. Stop pretending, nobody is paying you for it.

Movies in the last few years I thought were really good include IT, Wind River, Detroit, Dunkirk, all 3 apes movies, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, The Revenant, Sicario, The Gift, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, The Place Beyond the Pines, The Drop, Snowpiercer, 99 Homes, Captain Philips.

reply

We like the same movies although I haven't seen Detroit/IT/Dunkirk/The Drop/99 Homes but they are on my list.

reply

all extremely garbage, sterile films with shit digital photography and godawful predictable scripts. I am 34 years old and have seen a lot of films, from silent to now and I carry the great ones with me all the time, in order to consider IT, one of the worst films I've ever seen, a good movie I would have to wipe out all the great horror and suspense films I've seen in the past because IT doesn't even come close to a mediocre film like the Exorcism of Emily Rose. I would have to forget all of that, well that is not me. If that's how you do it good for you but I am not that and every new film has to measure up to what has come before and films have been way, way, WAY below the bar since from at least 15 years ago. So again, stop pretending.

reply

I just do what every other person in the world does and judge a movie based on the quality of THAT movie. Not compare it to stuff that came out decades ago. I'm sorry that you can't enjoy any modern movies.

reply

The only way to assess the proper quality of a particular movie, or ANYTHING ELSE for that matter, is to be aware of other movies, so your argument makes no fucking sense. And that is why you find those films good, you are not a critical person, like 99.9% of people out there. Before it could be 60% non critical thinking people, 40% critical thinking. Now it's 99.9% non critical. Good for you!

reply

It's true. Fake statistics are the best way to bolster a ridiculous opinion.

reply

Some stories are so good that they deserve to be revived every so often for a new generation. The last major adaptation was in 1974 so it seems to me the time is ripe.

Why has A Christmas Carol been adapted over and over so many times? The story is just that good.

reply

this is getting mediocre reviews

reply

It's getting MIXED reviews is a better way to put it. And I gather that a big reason for that is because the story's already been done before.

BTW do you ever respond with anything more than a single sentence?

reply

no

What's wrong with being concise?

There's a difference between being concise and post-whoring.

Go look through his posting history. It's 3500+ instances of mostly-useless contributions.

This is a discussion forum but what he doesn't isn't really discussion.

Don't ever read Shakespeare, it will ruin everything for you. There are very few original ideas.

reply

Hollywood believes if they remake a profitable movie, then they'll make money, too.

I've become bored with movies. Someone needs to invent the Holodeck.

reply

Certain stories being so good they should be re-told for different generations sounds about right. But also itโ€™s for profit, and so that people who are fed up with modern movies can complain and complain about how Hollywood sucks now. ๐Ÿ˜

It works.

reply

It all started with this guy named Bill Shakespeare. Everything since was a rip off.

Just kidding, Shakespeare was just retelling old stories, too. There are only a few original stories in the world. Everything else is just a retelling with some twist and turns here and there.
