Waste of Johnny Depp

To give him as small a role as Ratchett. He should have been Poirot. Let Branagh stay behind the camera.

reply

Johnny doesn't seem to think so or he wouldn't have signed on.

reply

I don't know, Johnny may just be getting desperate at this point. His star power is fading, especially as of late.

There are so many films where a famous actor has only taken up a few minutes on screen but stole the show. Jack Nicholson in 'A Few Good Men' for example. I am sure JD has the acting talent to make his time on screen, short as it is, count.

reply

Oh, I'm sure he'll do fine as always, and for certain his screentime will count, given Ratchett's death sort of sets up the whole movie. But I'm thinking of, say, 'Into the Woods', another time Johnny Depp had a small role and made him feel wasted.

Nicholson in 'A Few Good Men' is a great example, though. I forget how small his role is in that movie till I re-watch it. He's in maybe three scenes, fifteen to twenty minutes of screentime in all.

I think it´s brilliant that he is playing Ratchett a role that is so much different from most roles he played.
Plus I just wouldn´t want a "Captain Jack Sparrow"-Poirot

I can agree with that. I think Depp's trouble is that he or somebody giving him advice has decided that because Sparrow is such a hit he should play every character that way. Now, I liked 'The Lone Ranger' a lot more than most, and he was basically a Western Jack Sparrow in that. But he used to be able to play more serious roles, and he just doesn't do them anymore. I think he needs to 1) realize that he doesn't need to play every character the same and 2) get the right role to prove that he can still play a different type of character. Because I can definitely see him playing Ratchett like he would play Jack Sparrow.

yeah, i guess you´re right

but i think that these small roles are much more difficult than the bigger ones. because you have to portray the essence of the character in shorter time

Fair point.

I totally agree.

Name one film from the past 10 years he´s been in in wich he didn´t play a character who is not similar to Jack sparrow and/or proves he is capable of playing different kinds of characters.

reply

Public Enemies...I guess?? Lol

reply

haven´t watched that. even if he was good in it, that means it´s almost been 8 years since he was good.

As to this point, he is probably the most over-rated actor of the world.

reply

Yea, tbh the last time I was really moved by anything he did was Finding Neverland

reply

He is probably keeping a low profile and trying to get some eyes off his private life.

reply

That would make sense. I was trying to recall if he was cast in this film before or after the divorce thing blew up the Internet.

Does he even deserve to be in this? Putting his alcoholism and abusing women issues aside, he's lost whatever talent he's had recently. He's been phoning in so much lately, even Marlon Brando in his later years would be ashamed. Even for a small role like this, I would've been happy to see someone else than Depp in this.

Still, 70mm, Leslie Odom Jr, Josh Gad, Daisy Ridley, and Michael Peña are too hard to ignore.

What a grip! That's from counting money.

I don't think it's such a bad thing to take a lot of supporting roles this late in his career. Seems that's just what happens to big actors at a certain point, unless they're Tom Cruise or somebody lucky enough to land a Marvel role like RDJ did. Anyway, like another poster and I discussed, I don't think he's necessarily lost talent. It's just that he's been playing the same role so often and hasn't branched out into anything else that he just needs to get the right role that will remind audiences he can still turn in a great performance.

Agreed. The number of remakes/reboots I have enjoyed in my lifetime can be counted on one hand, but it's a cast like this that makes me interested in them anyway.

I don't mind him taking supporting roles; it's just he needs to play actual characters. After Public Enemies, he's been letting the make-up do the acting while he just rehashes the same quirks of his previous roles. Black Mass was a return to form but it wasn't enough. He needs to prove his talent and that's gonna take a long time, especially considering his recent flops and his controversy, for the public to accept him again, but hey, they forgave Mel Gibson and Reese Witherspoon, despite both outing themselves as reprehensible human beings, so the same could happen to Depp. Art over the artist.

Agreed on both points.
