a unique poirot - Your advice for Mr Brannagh

Okay HP must be one of the most iconic literary characters ever played. Many say that Suchet's depiction is unbeatable, with Usinov's being the most humorous and Finney's being the most intense....
If you were KB,how would you play Poirot to make him familiar yet different enough to make him your own?your

I haven't seen Suchet's and Ustinov's but I read about how good their takes on the character are. I have only seen the one with Finney as Poirot and I thought he was terrific in the role. It seems like much of the movie's would be success will depend on how people will receive Brannagh's portrayal of the character. Perhaps he could draw bits and pieces from the other takes on the character and see what could make a fresh yet faithful characterization.

"You can't fight her - no one ever got the better of her. Never, never. She was beaten in the end, but it wasn't a man, it wasn't a woman. It was the sea!"

Brannagh should do with Poirot what Robert Downey Jr. did with Sherlock Holmes - make him modern, cool, hip, let him use not only his brains but also his muscles, put him in action and fight scenes, etc...

Poirot in a fist fight? Wow, what a terrible idea. It just wouldn't be Poirot, so why bother keeping the names? Just change the title of the movie and characters and go with something else entirely.

He doesn't necessarily have to use his fists...He could use his cane as a very efficient melee weapon. Also, his cane could have some hidden surprise gadgets. In some episodes from the TV show for example he has a special cane with a telescope - this could be revealed to actually be a sniper rifle disguised as a cane...

Yeah, but Robert Downey Jr's movies are also very different from the original Sherlock...This is what people want now: action, adventure, romance, Poirot must change to be successful in this era, he must be more like James Bond...

I'd just like him to avoid sliding into Wallander mode. Poirot may have his serious side but he is nowhere near as glum as Wallander is.

Well Holmes is Holmes and Poirot is Poirot. Poirot is a well-mannered Belgian GENTLEMAN, let's keep him that way.

Poirot can be well-mannered and still kick ass.
Take for example this scene from Kingsman: The Secret Service. Collin Firth plays a secret agent, who looks like a harmless English gentleman with big nerdy glasses. He is talking with someone else in a pub and some street thugs tell him to leave: "You should get out of the way, Granddad, or you'll get hurt and all.".
Collin goes to the door, he locks it and replies calmly: "Manners...maketh...man...Do you know what that means? Well, let me teach you a lesson."
He knocks one guy by throwing a mug of beer at him, and beats the others by using his umbrella and some incredible fighting skills:

This is exactly how the new Poirot should be!

It'd run the risk of making him unlikable but he could play up his vanity or emphasis more on his deductive skills.

Whatever you are, be a good one.

He's also directing the movie.

Having only seen five seconds of the finished performance, I can only advise him to...

CGI THAT COWBOY FACIAL HAIR OFF YOUR FACE AND PUT POIROT'S POINTY BLACK MOUSTACHES WHERE THEY BELONG!!!

Seriously, the stache and beard are SO wrong, Poirot just isn't Poirot without the proper dyed, waxed, pointed, out-of-style black moustache. Of a thin black moustache would look ridiculous on Brannaugh's pale square face, but the thing about Poirot is that he DID look ridiculous and didn't care. If his femme little waxed moustache and patent-leather shoes made people underestimate him, well, he liked being underestimated and he had the guts to look like he wanted to look without caring what other people thought. And what Brannaugh's moustache choice is showing is a fear of looking ridiculous... which IMHO means he doesn't really get the character.
