FDR's father was elected town supervisor in Hyde Park

Yes, he was also a democrat.

reply

Yes!

Someone mentioned to me their surprise at the party line choosing that the Roosevelt family had... how it surprised them.

The only thing I could think of quickly was that political parties were different as they are today...and politics was their chosen place back then, so as surprising as it can be... when I think about it, maybe not so surprising?

I don't remember if they covered this, but one reason FDR chose the democratic party was that Teddy's sons would probably be making their way through republican party ranks.

reply

Indeed - and another reason was because his father was a Democrat.

reply

And while he was still practicing law, he was asked to run as a Democrat to get rid of a Republican incumbent.

reply

There was the two sides of the vast Roosevelt family. The Hyde Park part was predominately Democrat while the Oyster Bay side was Republican. FDR in his early years looked up and had support for his cousin TR, but was always a Democrat.
Whereas the Kennedys were pretty solid Democrat.
